Interests (Hobbies, favorite activities, etc.):

Snow Ski, Kayaking (flat and easy wilderness), mountain bike (hill biking really), fishing, Karate, camping, hiking, my huskies, frequent out door mini trips with family, friends and solo. Rock, Blues, Jazz, blues harp.

Home Mountain (where I ski most often):

Cascade Mountain Wisconsin. This little gem is 2 1/2 hrsw from home and I go up that way about 50 times a year, year round to see the world. The mighty Wisconsin river travels some 450 miles through here with the Baraboo range along the way. Eagles, Deer, Coyotes, even mountain lions have had a great resurgence in this area. The area is mild without the high altitude difficulties but also without the mountain vistas. But this area is not to be underestimated for its beauty and diversity. For those of you who believe that only the west is beautiful and wild, come to Northern Wisconsin, Minnesota and see what the Great Lates has in store.

Number of days I ski in a year:

20-30/yr. About half of those days are in Wisconsin and I usually go on two week long trips somewhere and everywhere out west. I have been to many places multiple times over the 38 seasons I've been skiing. Squaw, Snowbird, Alpine Meadows, Vail, aspen, Snowmass, Jacksonhole, Park City, all of Summit County Colo many times, Sno Bowl Az, And 90% of all the ski areas in Wisconsin and Michigan. MOUNT BOHEMIA MICHIGAN.

Terrain or conditions I like to ski the most:

I like ungroomed blue runs with some bumps but certainly with fresh powder and no one around. I am certainly capable of enjoying gnarly black runs but it is alot like work. Big swooping turns where you rocket across the face of the run with skis bending and compressing into the turn. I like to really feel the terrain and I only stay in one fall line for a short time flowing from one type of skiing, big turns then small, deep into the corners, then out to the middle again.
Then I stop and look around. I Look at the bounty, I see the sky and stop and apprieciate what we have and where I am. It is a privledge to ski in all of that beauty. Take your eyes off the snow. It is not a race.

Gear I use:

I ski on Head Monster 78s, 183 cm. Boots are old Technica with Zip Fit liners. Forget foot beds, Zip Fit custom liners are extremely easy to custom refit at home as often as you like. The fit is snug and perfect. I will never ski again without them. These boots will last forever. Custom fit your own boots, period.

The regions where I typically ski:

Midwest and west. Wisconsin, Michigan, Colorado, Utah, Wyoming. I live at only 980 ft above sea level and as most midwesterners will tell you , exerting yoruself at high altitude like colorado makes for a hard week of skiing. And this effect is enhanced as I reach to 55 years. So I am starting to appreiciate resorts with lower altitudes like those in Utah and at places Whistler. If you campare the altitutde at Copper (but still my favorite even though now condo city) or Vail against Park City or Canyons you find that the Colorado resort base is roughly the same as some of the Summits in Utah and at Canada's Whistler. These areas are lower in altitude adn provide a more oxygen rich environment in which to slide and reover with a more restful sleep. Many flatlanders will tell you stories of altitude sickness that really impacts ther abiltiy to function at many ski resorts expecially in the higher altitude colorado.
