First day SLC resort advice...leaving a day early (tonight) to beat the Nor'easter!

We were supposed to be leaving at 7:05pm tomorrow (Wed) for four days of skiing in SLC, but to try to beat the storm we moved our flight out to tonight same time (JFK departure).  Assuming we get out tonight....we will have a bonus day on the slopes tomorrow! :)

We will be staying tonight in the SLC Airport at the SpringHill Suites and will have a rental car.  We are two Dads and two daughters (13 & 12).  One boarder in the group and we are what I would consider advanced....nothing crazy though.  We did buy lift tix on Liftopia for PCMR on Thursday.  Where to ski our first day Wednesday?

I was actually between Brighton, Snowbasin and The Canyons for our first day.  Reasons:  I figured since we were in SLC the first night the drive to Snowbasin tomorrow morning would be a shorter one than from Kimball Junction (Park City) where we are staying the rest of the week.  The Canyons would make sense since its close to our hotel once we finish for the day.  As for Brighton I have never been and hear good things...wasn't on our list so now we could do that the first day.  We do plan on hitting LCC a little later in the week.

What do you guys recommend for our first (bonus) day?  Thanks!

Alta or Snowbird - don't miss the high alpine scenery on your trip.

Snowbasin is good for the first day if you are staying near the airport.  Easy drive up, plenty of terrain to suit everyone, little crowds. I would hit that or Brighton my first day and save the Park City resorts for when you are staying in PC to avoid the drive.

I guess this means you won't qualify for the quick start free skiing at Park City resorts because you'll arrive night before first ski day?  In that case, another point for Snowbasin is that the elevation is relatively low, approx 6,000-9,000' above sea level.  This makes an easier adjustment for flatlanders on first day at altitude.  Also, the two gondis both rise about 2500 vertical feet and serve different parts of the mountain.  You can use those two for nice long blue square and single black diamond runs all day long.  The drive to Snowbasin is not too difficult/hilly either.  Conditions were great there about a week ago.

Wow James, very technical!  Snowbasin is the easiest drive from the Airport.  They are calling for snow on Wed. so Thur. is going to be good.  I plan on being there myself!

Another thought: Powder Mountain. I've been riding there the past three days and each one has been better than the last. There's still a ton of deep, fresh snow and, to be honest, I'm not even sure where/when it's from. It snowed on/off Sunday and Monday, but it rode much deeper than the totals (3 inches I think by Powder's own count). You won't find this type of snow at any of your other options--even Snowbasin.

Snowbasin or Powder Mountain.   Tough call but you and your group will have fun at which ever resort you venture to for your first day.  Enjoy!

Just a follow up we ended up at Snowbasin today...an easy drive from the SLC airport where we spent the night.  Highly recommend the SpringHill Suites Marriott at the airport...new hotel, nice suite rooms and a fantastic free breakfast.  We stopped at Canyon Sports in Ogden/Riverdale for discount lift tickets and headed up.  Of course no crowds and was able to park in the second row at 9:45!  Snowbasin skied great although it was a bit crusty but there was some untracked powder to be found especially all the way on the left side of the mountain (looking up) off the Strawberry Gondola.  Of course the lodges and food was great...you have to try the Cheese Potato and Beer soup in the Needles Lodge...really good.

So its off to PCMR tomorrow...never skied it so I am excited.  There seems to be no meaningful snow in the immediate forecast but just a few inches would probably help freshen things up a bit.  All in all a good day....looking forward to more tomorrow!

Marc
