I am looking for something with very hard trails open without the crowds.
What ski resort should I go to on a holiday weekend?

Out-of-the-way spots are really your only bet. In the East, I would avoid any resort within a 4-hour drive of NYC, which is a good number of the big resorts in NY and VT. It is a good bet to not go anywhere near places like Hunter, Stratton, and Killington. I guarnatee these places will be an out-of-control zoo on a Holiday weekend. I have not been to all but it is my experience that the farther the resort is from NYC, the less crowds you will find, although all resorts will have larger than normal crowds on holiday weekends.
The only place I have been to that I can be assured I won't be facing a zoo is Big Sky, MT. The only problem is it is not the easiest place to get to. I have been there twice--both on Holidays(New Years and Presidents weekend) and the place was eerily quiet both times. Some of the lifts were nearly empty and I never had more than a 30 second wait for a lift, except the tram. If you want difficult terrain, there is plenty of it.
