Find a nice condition used pair of K2 Four 198's.

Install a racing plate/lifter, derby flex or the like and mount up with some good high din bindings like Solly 997 Equipes.

Wax em up right, take some time dialing em in  and  that's a cheap setup that will bury your old 217's.

You ought to be looking for a ski and andor along with a single long pole. I'm sure you have plenty of pine tar, bees wax and other makings for wax lying around for the ski and a pelt or two for the andor.

Its certainly has been a long down hill slide for skiing since Sondre Nordheim started tinkering around with skis.

I would never use a race plate going fast. 

That means I would have to fall farther to the ground.

That is not a good thing and it hurts.

Yep!  But shape goes way back to some skis dug out of a bog in Norway.

For that matter, I have a pair of pretty darn old one piece wood XC skis that have some shape ... good ol' hickory .... 70/50/60

Not a lot but my kids early P-30 Jr, race were next to them .... 70/55/71

A few years later and we see 110/60/92 on my older Stockli SC's.

There were some guys at WP, I believe, that tried making shape skis in the 40s too, but the technology (wood) wasn't up to the design and they failed.

In a slight tangent, does anyone in this thread remember what the term of art was for the old 1950s and previous super-short skis (some with reverse camber)?

There was a thread on here showing pictures but my google-fu fails.

The name is 'Goon' skis if we are talking the same thing. I have a picture I'll post later. They are wooden twin tips, about 160 cm, maybe.

The skier on the left! She is a lovely lady named Starr Jordan. Standing to her left are my brother, myself and a dapper dude. We were all participating in the Hannes Schneider Meister Cup in 1998.

Get real and take advantage of some recent race gear. Start with GS training... The W/C guys are hitting 100kph in some GS courses now. In a two-g arc even you might have to admit you missed something when you were in the joint.

Or PM him.

He would be able to tell you (after seeing you ski in person or video)

if your personal perception of ski abilities is correct or not.

And recommend stiff skis that would help you achieve your goals.

He's a former WC racer with decades of coaching and teaching experience.

However, if your skiing sucks, he'll tell you so. So park your ego at the door.

If it's got potential, he'll tell you that too. And what to work on.

But again, park your ego at the door. He pulls no punches and tolerates neither fools or trolls.

Come to think of it, although HH is predominanlty a SL skier, he has done a few DH runs in his day too and could probably teach OP a thing or two.
