Community Wish List

Thread Starter

We'd like to get the community's input on the Top 10 New Features we'd like to see on EpicSki for 2011. All constructive suggestions are welcome. We'll use this thread to come up with and cull down to our Top 10.

Making the Top 10 doesn't mean it'll get done, but generally the ones that stand to provide the greatest good for the greatest number of people will be most likely to succeed.

Please, tell us your wishes!

Times 2.  Basically, I'd like all the features from the old site back in place before we start working on new stuff.  It's like we stopped carrying on about it and fixing things got put aside in favor of stuff that was new.

Decent search would add so much value it isn't funny. There are times I know what I am looking for & I have trouble finding it. Big time. Even threads I posted in! The interface is not wonderful but could be tolerated if things worked - but most "options" do not work correctly. I suspect this is part of why we have so much nonsense going on with the same thread (pick your favorite) fired up every couple days. I almost feel bad telling people to "search". Yeah, better than when it did not work at all...but... back in the day in a different place, I would not even have signed off on the site's search functionality as being "beta".

Make the editor stop wrecking core OS editing functionality (see post #3).

Oh yeah - making resort reviews not be so obviously a kludge of purchased product reviews would be nice.

Please do something about Super Wide Post Format.

1) Some kind of WAP/simplified phone interface would be really nice.  Please don't make it iPhone-only.  The normal site works, marginally, on my Palm Pre, but it's agonizingly slow unless I'm on a WiFi connection, and even then it doesn't really render properly given the screen size.

2) The search isn't quite as broken as some people think it is, but it could definitely be improved.

3) It would be nice to work in general on ways to stop getting the same questions over and over and over in some of the forums (like "I'm going to buy my first pair of skis.  How long should they be?").  Better search might help.  Maybe commissioning some FAQs or stickied threads with links pointing to particularly helpful threads would also help.

4) Maybe some kind of post/thread rating functionality?  I've seen this work in other places, though usually in ones with a lower signal-to-noise ratio and less active moderation.  Then you can do things like hiding low-rated posts/threads by default, or pushing them down in search results.

Since other people were asking about it: integrated spell-check in the editor works fine in FF3.6.8 for me.  If it's broken for you, or doesn't work in other browsers, you should post it as a bug.

Yes, search is that bad. I say this with some domain familiarity. Yes, decent search would almost certainly reduce the amazing exact same thread every other day phenomenon. There are threads/posts I know for a fact exist & I can't find them. And I'm not exactly ignorant about how to frame a query. So despite nudging about search - I tend to feel for newbs replicating threads.

It is hard to comprehend how this search engine is in play. It should be "easy" to do something better. It would benefit everyone.
