Which ski for Tahoe? Rossi S86, Sultan 85 or Salomon Lord?

Per my last post, I am 6'3", 215#, 7-8 level, 56 y/o long time Tahoe skier looking for new ski to enjoy mostly cruising the groomers, but also going off trail to play in pow and chop. Don't ski the bumps much any more.

Going to buy new boards very soon (have a Utah trip set for next month...hoping for some light stuff). Think I have narrowed the field down to the Rossi S86 (186cm), the Sultan 85 (184cm) and the Salomon Lord (185cm). For my size, I think the lengths are right??

Anyone have any thoughts on the subject? Thanks very much.

I haven't skied the Salomons since I'm mostly interested in damp skis, but I've demoed the other two and it's a toss up.  They're quite similar.  I slightly preferred the Rossis off piste, and the two brands probably would be equal on piste except that the Dynastar seemed to have a bad tune.

Given your height, weight and preference for the groomed, I'm sure you've got your lengths right.  You'll probably want such skis to be shorter, but not until you turn 65.

We have the Rossi and Dynastar in demo at the Start Haus in Truckee...come by and demo them.

The Lord is not great for someone your size, but the other two would be fine. If you are quick-turny kind of guy, you might have a preference for the Rossi, but if you make more cruising turns, you'd probably like the Dynastar better.

I highly recommend Demo-ing the skis. If you are going to be near Tahoe City- give Guy or Daryl a call at Tahoe Dave's 530.583.6415- they are very good at matching people up with skis. And they will apply the price of demos to the skis.

Thanks to all of you for your comments. Based on your suggestions, I spent a full day yesterday at Squaw's demo center. So far, I have skied the Mantra (184), the Kendo (184), the Rossi S86 (186) and the Watea 84 (184).

I had a lot of fun covering the mountain, trying to put these skis into different conditions. It was my first opportunity to ski anything wider than 78mm under foot. Each ski exhibited slight differences. I was especially impressed with the edging capabilities of these mid-fat skies. I just rolled them on edge, they hooked up and I smiled. We also found some softer stuff to zip through and, again, it was great fun. They are very responsive and made my confidence grow as I pushed them (and myself).

I ran out of time and energy to continue my search. I am anxious to start phase two ASAP. I hope I can find and test the following:

- Kastle MX88 (188)

- Sultan 85 or 94 (184)

- Prophet 90 (186)

That will give me seven "mid-fat" skis to choose from (if I can find them). I know now that one of these will become my new daily ski. Later, I'm sure a mid-90 or above will join the quiver. Wow baby, skiing is fun again! Thanks.
