Sports Challet or Privately Owned Ski Shop ????

In regards to mounting skis, $40 vs $55. Worth the expertise of a local shop or should I go for the discount red shirt employee deal?

When I lived in the LA area, I had my stuff mounted at REI.  I'm not sure they are much better than Sports Chalet, but they do have an established satisfaction guarantee if they screw things up.  Even at the "core" shops in LA (are there such places in LA) there is no guarantee that the guy doing the mounting isn't inexperienced.  I was always very explicit about where I wanted the mount to be and left a cell phone number for them to call if a question came up.  Back in the day I think my Gotamas were the first pair ever seen in the local REI. smile.gif

Do you remember what they charged at REI?

If they have the jig, it is kinda hard to screw things up.  But a lot of shops do screw things up.  If you go to a box store, double check the work before you leave.  I've had Sport Chalet in Dublin mount my kid's bindings 1/2" off, and REI in Concord forget a screw for the toepiece and forget to tighten the screws completely on one ski.  How many people out there have no idea that they are skiing on skis that are mounted improperly?  I now spend the money and get it done right the first time.

RockSlide,

You should try Ian at SkiNet in Studio City. He is a good guy and gets a lot of support from the locals, but I don't know what he charges.

If you are in OC, take them to Don at the new Tustin REI. He has mounted all of my families ski's and does a really good job. Mounts cost $30

REI charged me $25 for a mount about a month ago, but it was a system ski. Non-member price is higher.

Uh, your new ski costs you say $700-900. So you'd risk having holes drilled into it in the wrong places for $15, or less than 1% of the cost? th_dunno-1[1].gif The only bad mount jobs I've ever had were at big box stores like Ski Market or REI. (I'm an REI member, love 'em, would never let them near a pair of skis.)

I've had at least four pair of ski & binding mounts done at REI and never had a complaint.  I'd definitely hesitate to go to Sport Chalet for something like this, I think their staff is all seasonal folks.
