looking for similar ski to 2009 Dynastar Legend 8000

I've been skiing for 3 years, the first year on rentals and the past 2 years on K2 Apache Raiders.

I had the pleasure of Demo-ing the 2009 Dynastar Legend 8000's in 172 last weekend and they were amaaaazzzing! Its like riding a BMW vs my current Toyota Corolla. No- make that a 1960s volkswagen beetle. My current skis are somewhat choppy and the L8K's are like upgraded suspension, not to mention i can push it harder and ski faster than what i'm currently used to. In short, they were awesome!

Ive been looking around but they dont even make that ski anymore, and i saw some used ones but if i buy online, i might not be able to get it in time for my Jan 3rd Alta skiing trip in Utah!

So, does anyone have a recommendation of a current model that is very similar to the 2009 Dynastar Legend 8000 skis?

I'm 5'9", 175 to 180 lbs and an advanced skiier (not expert). I dont do moguls(beacuse i dont know how)  and hardly do off piste, unless I have to. I probably ski about 3 or 4 powder days a year, and the rest of the other 20+ skiing days is just regular trails, blacks and double blacks without moguls

Thanks!

by the way, I'm female, not sure if that makes a difference

The Legend Sultan 85 rides very similar to the L8K, only a bit more stable and bites a bit better IMO. Also, the Exclusive Legend is women version FWIW.

I own a pair of 8000s but have never skied the Sultan 85.  Eveyrthing I have read about the Sultan 85 indicates that if anything, it is a better ski than the 8000.  It would be at the top of my list if I was replacing them.

Being an 8k aficionado for many years, and having 4 pairs scattered around the continent, I confidently bought a pair of Sultan 85's and stored them up at Whistler. I finally got to take them out last week, and wasn't overly enthusiastic - I was hoping for a new and improved 8K, and wasn't sure what I got.

Yes, they'll rail spectacularly, and sort-of feel like ice skates, but what I loved about the playful and do-everything character of the 8k was missing. I also have a pair of Mythic Riders there, and whan I took them out, back came the overgrown 8k feel that the Sultan didn't have. I even dulled about 6 inches back from tip to tail to see if the edges were too sharp and catching, and while that was better, I still put the MR's back on.

So - where am I now - read Dawgcatching's review of the Sultan 94, where he talks about the base finish of the 94's (and 85's) being suspect at best. I'll be back at WB in a couple of weeks and the Sultans will be going in to Fanatyko for some base work before they see the hill again. Let's hope that's the problem (or they'll be a pair of 3 day old Sultan 85's available for sale shortly).

what is it about the ski market that Dynastar would discontinue the entire Legend line? fickle? trendy? newness? could be time to find some and buy them before they all disappear.

Snofun, I demoed the Sultans last season and had a similar reaction being an owner of both the 8ks and the 4800s.  It felt planky by comparison.

$.  Gotta have the newest thing. and the manufacturers and shops gladly buy into the concept. That's why I consider many of the "professional" magazine reviews to be bogus - they're just continuing the status quo - Grizzly anyone?

I look forward to trying the Sultan 94, and really hope that the base tune situation is what's causing me to be "meh" about my 85's, but my experience so far, is if you're looking for a "bigger, better 8K", then demo before you buy as you might be disappointed

I'm taking my son out to WB in Feb., and if the tune doesn't solve my ambivilance towards it, I'll have to send a pair of MR's from SLC to WB as I know he won't like them either, and we can both have Dynastar's to ride that we like.

I ski on 8000's here in the east & love them. Last spring on a trip out west I rented the Sultan's (don't remember the #) for several days. They didn't feel at all the same as the 8000's. The biggest difference to me was that the Sultans had a tinny feel to them & made noice like a fiberglass ski. They were not as solid & quiet under foot as the 8000's. Hope I can get a few more years out of my skis since I keep them tuned pretty well.

I called my local store andt hey have last year's Mythic Rider in stock for $400 with bindings, and they said its EXACTLY the same as the L8K .. is this correct?

SnoFun3: I cant tell from your posts if you are saying that the Mythic Rider is pretty similar, or if you still think there is a big difference between the two...

Thanks!

I also had the pleasure of demoing the MR. I absolutely loved it. In fact, I was going to mention that in my original reply.

There is definitely a difference between the Mythic Rider and the L8k and it's a big more advanced -- but not by a big ton. My skill level is similar to yours per your description. I certainly did not have trouble working them (probably not at the fullest but nonetheless).

Back to lady's skis, untracked.com has quite a few Dynastar Exclusive Legend variations at half off if you want to take a quick look.

Believe it or not, the Dynastar Legend line is not all that commonly found at most local hills in the East (no idea about any place else). I've had my L8K for the 3th season (and I bought it one season old), and people all over are still asking me: "What's that?"

No, the MR is wider than the 8000 (88mm waist vs 81mm) .   Not the same ski.

The mythic isn't the same ski, but very similar construction.

If you loved the 8K then buy that ski. I had mine out for two days last week and still love them .

Wherever you demoed them would probably be happy to sell their old stock at a decent discount.

The MR is a totally different ski than the 8000. It's wider, beefier, has a bigger turning radius and no discernable speed limit. A great ski in 3-D snow, it's workable but not much fun on hardpack (zero dampening - you'll feel every little ripple). I own it and love it, but it's not nearly as versatile as the 8000.

Why don't you look for the Sultan 80 as that is the closest to the 8000? I am surprised that no one has suggested it yet.

I'f you'll be at Alta they are selling a lot of there old demo gear(lots of legend stuff.  there is also a good consignment shop in SLC called Second Tracks Sports.  and I've seen sone L8K's there from various years.   I  am not associated with either company. I just think you might find a good deal there.   Check our local for sale listing that are similar to craiges list calles KSL.com.  there is a goog ski section under the classifieds.  there will be ads for both places.  and I I ski the old 8k theat is mostly orange and I love them too.  I use the 4800 fro tele skis and they are  a blast.
