In Switzerland 1/1-1/10 -- looking for side trip recommendation

My girlfriend and I are going to be in Villars, Switzerland (Bretaye/Les Diablerets ski areas) from 1/1-1/10.

1) If anyone's in the area, I'd love to meet up for a few runs and buy you a beer.  Or some rosti, if that's more your thing.

2) We're thinking about maybe doing a side trip somewhere for a couple days, most likely the weekend of 1/7-1/10.  Any recommendations?  I've been to Villars before, but not any of the other ski areas around there.  At the moment we're waiting to see how the snow, etc. is, and we'll probably make a decision last-minute.  I'd love to see Chamonix, but I've heard the weather's usually better later in the season.  Zermatt's another possibility.  But if there's some other must-see/must-ski location nearby, I'm all ears.

TIA!

If you want to stay close, go to Gstaad.  Also the glacier at Les Diablaret is nice. Zermatt is a bit of a trip from Villars.

I wanted to get up to the glacier last year, but the conditions weren't very good and, I don't know, we were lazy Americans.  smile.gif  That you can just ski across and back from Bretaye in a day.

Gstaad might be just what I'm looking for.  Thanks!

Gstaad is pretty amazing, just don't call it GUH-Stod, it's Shhtaad, while I am sure this could cause serious arguments, my sister lived there for 3 years and that's how the locals say it. Some great skiing and one of those places you get to brag about having been to, right up there with St.Morritz and Megeve in my book.

French resorts are usually not ready this early in the season and need another few weeks to really get dumped on, but check the conditions and if Chamonix is good then it's a GREAT place to ski, plus and not that I have ever had a problem with the French, they seem to be the nicer in ski resorts. You will eat well and drink even better in Chamonix!
