It came up a short while back. What distinguishes a racer is that he/she can put their skis where they want them, to the inch, throughout the turn, on any terrain.
I'm not sure you ever learn that if you are never compelled to turn where you have to turn instead of where you want to turn.
a famous coach up here said: if you turn where you want to, you're a recreational skier.

I know the trend is away from starting with racing, but I don't think that is necessarily a good thing. All (OK almost) good older skiers started racing. Now, not so much.
One of the goofiest most innovative modern skiers ever was a solid racer once.
