My son, a good but not incredible skier, was set to buy a pair of Volkl Mantras when he was talked into the Volkl Amaruq instead. The sales guy - who seemed to know his stuff - said the 177 Mantras were too much ski for my kid. He's 16, about 5'10" (tops) and 125 lbs. (also tops). The Amaruq is a backcountry ski, I know, but the guy said they're fine on groomed runs too. Any thoughts before they mount the bindings?
Yikes, quick question: What do you know about the Volkl Amaruq?

HI, did you buy the Amaruqs? and does he like them?
I am at the other end of the spectrum, 55, good skier, bought 177 Amaruqs at end of last season as a mostly inbound climbing ski. (mounted with marker tours). I like the ski a lot. It is quick and stable on groomers, and very smooth on heavy powder - I have not skied it on light snow yet. HOWEVER - it is a wood only ski - so it will bounce on crud and small hard bumps. Very lively, great in moguls. Great in trees. I also have some Mantras and there is nothing similar. The Amaruq is light quick and springy. The mantra is a machine, much more stable.
My guess is that your son will like the Amaruq and have a lot of fun with the nimble feel and spring.
