Tahoe ski rental - better to rent in tahoe or bay area?

First off, if this thread is in the wrong forum I apologize.

So I live in the bay area and a few friends are coming in town to ski in north lake tahoe.  None of them have gear so they'd be looking to rent.  No experts or anything so any basic rental would do, with cost as the most important factor.

Is it preferable to rent gear in the bay area and drive it up there or should I rent gear in Truckee or something?

Also any recommended places would be greatly appreciated!

Rent in Truckee, then you don't have to haul everything up and back (with Bay Area gas prices being what they are).

Tahoe Dave's has multiple locations (you can return anywhere) and an online coupon:

I've also rented at Porters and sometimes come across coupons in local advertisement booklets:

Far better to rent near where you'll ski in case you find an issue with the equipment.

Even better yet, rent at the resort. If you have an issue you won't have to end your day of skiing-or at least face a 3 hour interruption. You will pay a bit more, but consider it a form of insurance

If you are in the Berkeley area:

Depending your time factor, it might be easier/better to deal with gear before/after going to the mtns.   It is just a case of where it is better to take the time hit.

If the time issue is neutral, rent in the mtn for the reasons listed above.

Don't rent at the resort, they charge a fortune and it can take half the day to get set up over the weekend.  We've had decent experiences at Porters, and the guys as California Ski company are also great.
