Group Trip Out West... Need some advice

I am planning a trip out west for 10-15 friends this March.  Our abilities vary from advance to jeans and Starter jackets so i am looking for a resort that will enable everyone to have a good time on and off the mtn. We are in our late 20s- early 30s and will be traveling w/ spouses.

Here is the ideal check list:

  • close to airport (within 1hr drive)
  • good après
  • varying in terrain (beginner to advanced)
  • good village/town with shopping, restaurants, spas

Vail is the first place to come to mind, but i have been there a half dozen times and would like to try something new. From the internet research i have done, Park City seems to be the best location (easy flight from ATL and NYC, quick drive, other activities, etc).

Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for your input.

Let it snow!

Stay in Salt Lake City and ski Alta, Snowbird, Solitude, and Park City!  Park City is a cool little town, but the skiing is not as awesome as the other Utah resorts.

Staying in park city is the the best option (really the only option) in UT for a large and diverse group that wants to have a fun vacation with skiing as a priamry but not exclusive focus.

Thanks for the input.  I was checking out homeaway.com for a rental.  are there any particular parts of PC that you would recommend staying in?  where is close to bars, restaurants, shops, shuttle route?

Stay as close to main street as possible.

Park City for sure. Main Street in the "old town" is where all the action is. However, there's an excellent free bus system that covers the whole area, including the cheaper places to stay at Kimball Junction (the bit just off the main highway). There's some chain hotels there that are cheaper than the places in the old town, plus lots of eateries etc. That's where wal mart is too (oh boy!) and the Tanger Outlets.

A friend of mine has set up a concierge service that might be useful in your planning:

She instructs in Park City and has lived there for years.

I second Park City..within 35 min from airport. Great town. Also 3 resorts on the free shuttle (Canyons, PCMR, and DV) within 3-5 miles of each other. Deer Valley is a great groomed mtn. Alta/Snowbird not far away. DV and Alta are my favs.

Other choice would be Breckenridge. It's farther from Denver airport (11/2 to 1 and 45 hr) but the mtn has everything (all skier abilities including the highest lift in North America and great bowl skiing) and a neat mining town too(lots and lots of shopping and dining), plus you have Keystone within 7 miles and Copper Mtn within shuttle range too. And for the locals and off piste skiing, nothing beats The Legend (A-Basin).  It's also more scenic that Park City IMHO (other than Alta).  You can pm me for more info if ya'd like.:)
