height: 5'10

weight: 180lbs

years skiing: 8

level: intermediate

what runs: mostly blue diamonds, a few blacks, also like to jump off main trail and ski some fresh powder every once in awhile

where do I ski: twice a year east coast (Vermont), twice a year in the West (Utah, Jackson Hole, Tahoe, etc)

size: 167-170's

budget: around $500 give or take, looking for a used ski (demo, etc)

Overall I would consider myself a good skier, that tries to keep up with my brother in law which is an expert. I really need a ski that gives me that extra comfort, and truely makes me a better skier on those tougher runs, and when we hop off in to the trees & powder Something that will give me ultimate control.

I've heard nothing but good about the new AC30's, but I don't think the old ones would suit you.  Volkls in general can be pretty demanding.  I'd say go with the Recons, as they are very fun and forgiving, and something you can improve your skills on.  You might wanna consider something even a little bit lower on the skill level-totem pole so to speak, if you only ski like 4 times a year and are only an intermediate.

Any suggestions?

I haven't really skied a lot of intermediate skis, but I've heard really good things about the Atomic Smoke Ti.

As mentioned their are two AC30's. The first generation (red, I think) were quite stiff and less forgiving than the current version which also has a different shape and construction. The version you want is the current generation introduced 2 years ago. It is a white grey black with a little bit of red in the logo. It has the Marker Wide Ride Binding, think inegrated Jester and the double box construction with a steel layer instead of titanium. The result was a much better ski and one that I own and love. This year the graphics are more black grey and red but the same ski, For some reason they sold out last year but are sitting this year. You might find a good deal right after the first of the year

Good luck
