I’ve been reading a bunch of threads regarding wax as I try to figure out what wax to buy (I just took delivery of my first waxing iron today and look forward to waxing skis/snowboards for myself, family and friends). One person likes this wax and another person likes that wax and there does not seem to be any strong agreement on what’s best. I am a recreational skier only and therefore did decide (based on comments from the forum) that I should be fine with a universal wax on 99% of the days I ski. However, when I check out prices for “universal” waxes that bears are using they seem to vary dramatically. If they are all “universal” waxes, then why do their prices vary so much?
For example, Artech has the Toko Universal waxes at $10 for 250 grams while the Dominator Zoom is twice as much per gram. Hertel Super HotSauce is only a little more than the Toko and the Briko-Maplus is somewhere in between (if I did my math right).
Is durability the main issue? Do some universals last longer than others? Or do some universals provide demonstrably better glide than others? If there is little to no difference I will go with the cheapest. But if one costs twice as much but lasts four times longer, I’ll go with that one. Thanks for your advice.
