Riding the gondola at Breck, about half of the young, non-boarder dudes these days seem to be sporting Marker Dukes on their skis, always with full-scale alpine ski boots. I am trying to understand what is the point of skiing alpine skis and boots with a convertible alpine/AT binding?
When I ask, they usually say so that they can ski out of bounds, which I don't understand. If I'm skiing inbounds or resort side-country, I may well be skiing AT gear, but I never release my heels and I don't carry skins. If I'm skiing BC, I want a full lightweight AT set-up; I certainly don't want alpine boots. So, caveat that these guys might all have Dynafit Titans in their closet for the days they go BC, can somebody explain the utility of an alpine ski/alpine boot/Marker Duke set-up other than for impressing girls?
