Helldiver CA 178's, keep or toss

Essentially have a new, free pair of Helldiver CA's, 178 but I'm 6'3" and 215#.  Don't know if I should mount them or get something else.  Currently skiing Volkl Mantras and was considering AC50's or Blizzard 87's for the groomers and shallow crud.  Mantras are 191s

I've heard Helldivers are very beefy skis. 178 is a touch short for you, but only three lengths, so it's the middle, stiffer than say a 177 Mantra, maybe closer to the 184. They won't want to mach crud like your Mantras, but IMO ballpark, totally feasible for projected use - groomers, shallow crud, lots of turns. Mainly, you can't beat the price; I'd adapt.

Hell Driver TI is the beefy one.  Hell Driver CA not so much.

Haven't skied either, more going by reviews here. If true, then maybe limiting length, but still hung up on that free thing. Eg, would you turn down a nice ski, free, if it's the wrong size? Opportunity costs, I suppose, but still...

Yes.  Unless I had a lot more ski days to waste on the wrong ski.

Eh... I am about the same weight as the OP  and ski a 178 sultan 85 for my not much new snow conditions all mountain ski. I could ski them in 184 or 178. In relaity the 178 has a similar running lenght to my fat All mountain skis which are the 185 huge trouble. I like the "shorter length" for a low snow conditions ski, it makes for a more playful and versatile ski. I think intentions, style, skill level, mount point, balance, and intended conditions matter alot more than any gross biometric measure (height weight, how much you bench, etc...) when choosing between size X and size X+6cm.

I think going to the 190+ lengths only really makes sense for me if I ski fast all the time.  And I don't really ski that fast.

I don't really know if these fit in to the OP's quiver. But he might find he likes them better than the mantra. There is one easy way to find out. ski.gif

I haven't caught on to the shorter ski lengths yet.  Also have a pair of old style Gotamas for the powder.  I will likely not mount the 178's and get an all-mountain ski that is supreme for GS.  Truth is, the "free" skis are technically my 12 year old sons who snowboards.  He won them in a raffle.  I'm sure he would like something to pad his pocket, although he just was totally re-outfitted in new gear himself.  But we all know who is lighter in the wallet.
