Deer Valley Celebrity SkiFest - Mahre vs Moe

I was cruising the tv channels yesterday trying to find women's world cup racing. Sadly couldn't, but did stumble across the Deer Valley Celebrity SkiFest on CBS. There was a lot of fluff in the broadcast, and it was largely an infomercial for DV, but I was lucky to catch Steve Mahre racing Tommy Moe. Can't find the actual broadcast footage online, but there is this...

Clicking the Video link under the Gallery tab here yields "coming soon".

Is that phantom edging with that inside ski?  ;-)

I watched a few heats of this as well.

I happened to notice that none of the competitors I saw were wearing helmets,, even the Kennedys.  Didn't one of their kids die from a traumatic brain injury suffered while skiing down a blue one New Years Day (hit tree throwing football back and forth while skiing)/

I only caught one other race, with amateurs, and they were wearing helmets. Or at least Joey "Pants" was.

I tend toward a libertarian view on this subject - should be a matter of individual choice - but I picked up a helmet off season and have been wearing it, and never even notice it's there. Plus it's very warm on those very cold days.

Sadly a skier died at Aspen recently, and she was wearing a helmet. Helmets seem like a no brainer, but then again, skiing's an inherently dangerous pastime.

Guess this discussion should be moved to one of the many helmet threads.

Can we get back to "phantom edging" and "one-footed skiing" in the modern age?  ;-)

Well, Mahre's one edge wonder was faster wasn't it?  And, I'm betting the Kennedy kid hooked an edge right before he skied in to that tree.

Maybe 1 ski produces less surface area so less drag???I know you should also go faster with no brakes!!

I hope I can find the actual broadcast video online at some point. The race itself didn't last long, but some of the closer camera shots seemed to show Mahre stepping hard onto the outside ski to initiate turns.

Old habits die hard, I guess.  ;-)

Is it that old habits die hard... or the new ideas are only half baked?   ;)
