A cry for help...

It rained (again) last night. One to two inches of the unholy stuff. My grass is still green. I refuse to mow it. What meager snow sat on the trails at Sugarloaf came from the hands of man, and has probably reverted to its original state. I can not even bring myself to read those self-congradulatory trip reports from out west.

On my way to work this morning the NPR news included reports of big snows in Europe, and in western NY and even some snow showers in Tenn. And I yelled at my radio "WHERE'S OUR F..... SNOW??????"

Just sharing the pain. Thank you.

David

I sure hope it turns around at the 'Loaf by late Feb. as I will be making a reunion trip there with a couple of old ski buddies then. (I know it will, I lived and worked there for 20 years).

I am not near the loaf myself but certainly share your pain in the lack of new england snow..... probably why i am currently job searching out west....

d1, you are guilty of the "no snow in my backyard" phobia.

Here in Mass Wachusett reopened today after being closed yesterday during the rain.  Just one worthwhile run, but I have skied that run 29 times so far this year and enjoyed it quite a bit.   Sugarloaf is reporting 10 trails.

Sure it ain't much, but skiing a couple of groomers over and over is a lot better then sitting at home.  I realize you have a longer drive to ski then I do, but there IS skiing to be had and manmade snow is a lot better then the grass in your backyard.

D1 sugar is open in NC we have room for you and we can ski the 1 open top to bottom run all weekend !! ( I feel your pain)

Well, we don't have The Sound of Music like you folks in Stowe,

but we do have Sugarloaf, which, with the addition of 655 acres of backcountry/glade terrain, will be the largest area east of the Rockies.

If it makes you feel any better I had to get up early to deal with the 8" of heavy snow that fell at my house.  Talk about work.

I feel your pain.  The local mountains are experiencing excellent ski weather, there is plenty of snow and the entire hill is open, and I can't go skiing until the Tuesday before Christmas.  It really is difficult driving to work each day and seeing the snow on the mountains right in front of me, but not being able to go.  This too will pass.

I just found out it is likely to rain in the area I was planning to lay my first tracks on this Saturday.  Regardless, I'm F-n goin'.  After all, with temps in town being mid 30s it is likely to be cooler higher up  and might even be snow up where the lifts are.  If not, I'll ski until I'm wet, cold, and tired... or just cold and wet haha then head home to watch the Sooners beat the snot out of Nebraska for the Big 12 Championship Saturday night

Oh, yeah, I forgot to tell you, from December 21 through the end of the season I'm nearly free of obligations, so don't feel too bad for me.  I can ski almost every day from then on.

Don't worry. This Saturday will only have an inch or two of fresh, even though it will be sunny. Not like last weekend when we had 8" of light, dry powder and bluebird sunshine. And the snow level for Saturday night is looking like 2000', but only another inch or two,

I hear ya. I'm in freakin' Canada and on Dec 1 it was 9 deg C and raining. And then I got an email from a friend in Ireland who said it's -7 and snow everywhere. What?

Last year the US capitol got more snow than the Canadian capitol. What?

I want my weather back please.

Elsbeth

PS - My jealousy of you westerners has not turned to hatred...yet...So for now I say, enjoy what you've got!

Don't worry. If it continues that way, you guys can always sail around and burn our capital down again. I doubt many of us would mind much.

Yeah, because there's no ski industry in Maine.

Okay Captain Logic, why exactly would you throw that line in there to begin with. Your implication was that since the OP doesn't live in the "capitol of skiing" that he has no reason to complain about snow coverage. And yet, Maine is one of the best destinations for skiing in the East. No, not as big as Vermont or New York, but some of the largest mountains and solid snowfall totals. So your statement was misplaced. Might have worked if he lived in Rhode Island or Tennessee, but not so "logical" for Maine.

first the guy is complaining and maine has had open skiing earlier than anyone this year.

Second he is complaining about something he can not control IE the weather.

third he could easily changed where he lived or could have at one point in time. if he still choose maine other factors other than the skiing made his choice. I also never said there was no industry in maine.

So for all you East Coast skiers who haven't hit the slopes yet.  I skied open to close last Saturday and Sunday on 700' of vertical bliss in Central Wisconsin, and will do the same this weekend.  If you would like we can trade lives LOL I would much rather have an extra 2 to 3 thousand vertical and wait a couple weeks to ski than be skiing every year Thanksgiving weekend without fail.  But then again I would have to be a Pats fan.  No thanks, I will do my laps!!  Go Packers!!

BUPA, thank you for successfully sucking the life out of my good natured, innocuous post. You have converted an innocent bit of ski banter to a judgment on my life choice. Extraordinary.

So here is my judgment, or at least rank speculation. You probably have expressed your opinions more than any other non-Supporter of this splendid site. And here is rank opinion. If you want to be perpetually cranky, pony up the cost of admission.

First he wasn't really complaining so much as making an observational thread about the lack of snowfall.

Second, I reckon if he could control it, then he'd have no reason to "complain" about it. You've never complained about weather, traffic, illness or something else you had no control over? Don't answer, I'm certain you have.

Third why does it seem your default is "Well, you should have moved." A. It's not always that easy to up and move. B. Not everyone (even in this forum) sees fit to move based solely on snow/skiing. C. Why would anyone in their right mind move based on a couple weeks of bad skiing conditions? That point goes back to my original point: Maine is a good place to live if you value skiing and snow sports, so why is moving even relevant to bring up.

Fourth, you might want to develop a new boilerplate response. The "should have moved" one is losing mileage. Especially if you insist on injecting it into lighthearted threads that really aren't meant to be full-blown bitch fests.

just trying to say I post negative stuff in people complaining threads cause they are lame.I have not once posted anything like this.

are you really going to pull the not a supporter card? really? so your 20 bucks is truly worth more than every body I have helped out on this site? the free skis I have given away to close friends on this site, the lift ticket vouches that I give to people from this site. the free guide service I have done because I like to share the stoke. How about the stoke I have posted? I have never mentioned it before but never before has someone questioned whether I should be posting on this site before.

I would much rather see hey I went skiing on a WROD today vs man this winter sucks even though winter hasnt even started yet.

Joe find one thread I started of me complaining about something.
