I don't listen to music while skiing, but I can imagine it is similar to listening to music while riding (which I often do). Favorites are mostly electronic: Fila Brazilia, Oakenfold, Kruder and Dorfmeister, Bonobo, Whitest Boy Alive, odd Japanese pop. Other stuff I normally listen to, jazz and orchestral music, get drowned out by the whistle of the wind, as do lyrics on most of the indie rock I like.

Don't listen to music. I never am alone when i ski usually!
I never listen to music while skiing -- prefer the peace and quiet. That said, if you're inclined to listen, I'd go with Metallica. Yes, it's kind-of old-school, but it's hard to go wrong with Metallica under any circumstances.
I go reggae all the way. I tried hard rock, industrial, etc. but found that it was just annoying and distracting. Reggae is just chill music that puts me in an even better mood. I've got Bob Marley, Jimmy Cliff, Beenie Man, Yellow Man and Damian Marley loaded on my iPod.
to each their own, but I don't understand why you would listen to music when skiing. i love the sound of the boards on the snow, the wind and hearing others around me. If I'm on groomers, It becomes a safety factor. I do have an internal-Ipod and it does play reggae on powder days, foo-fighters, My chemical romance, Gas light anthem, phoenix, and whatever else pops in my mind.
My little friend sings to me all the time, so I don't need recorded music. Live music is best.
I have never used my ipod while skiing, but sometimes I like to jam out going up some of the longer lifts. This song always gets me super stoked for some reason...
If I am alone(which is almost never) and I truly dont want to talk people on lift(which is almost never) or there is noone at the resort.
I gasp plug in my small Ipod shuffle to my helmet.
its such an ecentric mix usually
but these some newer to me songs I am digging .

Really digging these guys for the past couple years the video is pure art

I listen to trance, its really soothing especially when you riding around. Look up some Armin van Buuren and see if you like him.
I can understand listening to music on the lift even though I don't do it myself. When actually skiing, I don't listen to anything but rather my own thought.
I also don't listen to music while riding or running either.
I have the radio on in the car. But 9 out of 10 times I don't recall what sound was on.
When I really want to listen to something, I tend to listen to it intently without doing other things. It's a distraction to the listening experience.
Granted, I don't multi-task well. That might be the reason I don't listen to anything unless I'm really listening.
I maybe an old guy now, but I have been known to listen to tunes from time to time while skiing, the only thing I will say is be careful...... over the years some of the biggest headers I have taken were when my concentration lapsed and I paid more attention to a particular song, than to my skiing.... it can and will bite you....
That said, I have about 500 songs on my IPod and/or Iphone and just hit shuffle.... My mix ranges from Bootleg Dead concerts, Tens Years After and Wilco, to Bright eyes, Ted Leo, and Matt Pond.......So I would say the best selection is whatever you like.
I don't listen while actually skiing anymore. But, love to pump jams on the way there (3 hour ride).
Here's high level what I have loaded and in order of general preference, but that order changes depending on the mood I'm in.
Punk, Classic Rock, Ska, Raggae, Rap, RnB, Hip Hop, Funk, Blues, Older Jazz, Country-mostly older but some recent, Black Gospel, Christian Rock, Classical, Jazz Fusion + a few others if there are any I have missed??
I often switch the genre order on the way home. I typically go with the "get pumped up" music on the way there and more spiritual stuff on the way home.
^^ Ditto!
I rarely listen to music while skiing, but I always listen to it on the way there. I tend to listen to different things depending on if I'm skiing Powder, Riding park or Going Fast and/or Big Lines.

There are really only two choices for what to listen to on your H&K MP5 whilst gaping down them hills:
The Chello chick from the Icelandic Hildurness:
...or The Dave and Mick Show:
.
On a good powder day...
Pink Floyd Learning to Fly
Not if I can help it.
But there are some resorts who insist on blasting music, and it's always the lamest bullshit in existence, like Styx or Journey or Billy frickin' Joel. Whatever gives them the idea that anybody would want to hear that crap is an utter total mystery to me.
Truth be told, the ipod is the greatest thing ever for ski resort music - those that want to listen to music have their choice, and those of us who don't aren't subjected to complete utter crap.
Me, I like the sound of the wind in the trees and of the snow under my skis. YMMV.
What Walt said... wind, wind in trees, snow hitting jacket, edges (especially the ones that are gaining on me)... that's what I want to hear. And I DO NOT want to hear the crap that the resorts are playing, either.
Below is a note that I sent to the CEO of Copper Mountain last year, after having to endure the 8AM–9PM piped-in tunes on their mall...
"Dear Mr. Ryman:
My wife and I just recently stayed at the Mill Club at Copper Mountain. Overall, it was quite a nice experience— we found it to be in the upper echelon of lodging at Copper and other North American resorts, and would consider returning in any season.
The only real issue we have is the constant music outside the window, piped into the mall. We prefer to listen to our own choices in music. We wish resort managements everywhere would get it into their collective heads that we go on vacation to ESCAPE the hubbub. You can't open your window, or sit on the balcony to read or talk, without being assaulted by this unnecessary noise, from about 8AM to 9PM, if I recall correctly.
I once saw Blaise Carrig from Vail Resorts quoted in a skiing magazine, in reference to music being played on the outdoor dining decks at their resorts, that the music “animates people”. And it does, in that people need to talk louder and gesture more to communicate with their companions or foodservice personnel. Is this necessary? I am 57 years old, and I like good loud music (I guess I have some level of “concert damage”)— but, only in its place.
My wife and I count among our fondest recollections of being in the mountains as when riding the lifts, or just standing still on a trail or in the trees, and listening to the nothingness, or the wind rustling the trees. As you must certainly have noticed, that those who require background music for their mountain experience are getting it through their portable devices. The rest of us, well...
It’s a mountain, not a night club."
I loved the classic rock Ski Liberty and Ski Roundtop used to play over their PA system during night skiing sessions back in the day. Some self important tight ass must have complained...
"My wife and I were having a nice ski when Van Morrison's Moondance came on the loudspeakers. That ruined our experience. We had gone to Roundtop to escape that sort of hubbub." :(
Hhmmm, self-important tightass... that's a first. ;-)

Nothing while skiing, but for stoke on the drive (or anytime), there is ONE skier's anthem, and this is it.
For a taste go to track 2 here, "The Pilot Song" by The White Buffalo:
http://www.archive.org/details/whitebuffalo2004-01-03.at831.shnf
We owe this to TGR's "The Big One" for making this song its theme.
