You know it!!!

Hey, look at it this way. With a cell phone, you can call the ski patrol yourself. Even before you crash. Like this:

NYCJIM. Epic is an open public forum. Your posts palpably exude rudeness and distain. You can't make a single post without insulting someone. Nor do you seem capable of posting anything that isn't a misanthropic rant. And when you get called on it you pretend that you were making a joke. You don't seem to have an ounce of compassion or consideration for anyone but your own self. My prior assessment -- raised by wolves -- is right on. You are the rudest person I have ever conversed with on EPIC. You are the self involved slob wallowing in your own personal bullshit problems  right here in this thread. From someone claiming to be an authority on morality, decency, and polite public behaviour you are the complete example of what not to do.

Here's an "augmented reality" iphone app called Real Ski. You point the phone camera at the scenery and it tells you what trail it is on the map.

omg omg omg...I hate ppl on trains who just let their hearts beat at high speeds.  All I hear is this ba-dum ba-dum ba-dum ba-dum.  It's sooo terribly rude.  These ppl just give no consideration to others.  They are so self-involved.  I wish ppl would exercise more so that their hearts will beat at a much slower rate.  That's what proper people like me do.

oh well...at least it masks the terrible clicking sound made by a person typing on a cell phone.  Life would be much easier if I was deaf and blind...then I wouldn't be so annoyed by the rudeness of society.

Well, yes, it is an open public forum.  Please remember that.  As for everything else you wrote?  It sounds good.  It looks good.  (Unless you texted it from a chairlift!  Or from the aisle at your local Piggly Wiggly.)  But it really isn't true or fair.  However, as you say, this is an open public forum.  As such, every techno-loving, inconsiderate, dingbat slob from this great land and beyond--Hell, even those from Utah and Minnesota and New York City--can participate.  I think even those from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts are allowed.   We have that Epic Ski, God-given,  inalienable right. (Cue Lee Greenwood "God Bless the USA"...)

(Let's all sing...)

From the lakes of Minnesota,
to the hills of Tennessee.
Across the plains of Texas,
From sea to shining sea.

From Detroit down to Houston,
and New York to L.A.
Well there's pride in every American heart,
and its time we stand and say.

That I'm proud to be an American,
where at least I know I'm free.
And I wont forget the men who died,
who gave that right to me.

And I gladly stand up,
next to you and defend her still today.
‘Cause there ain't no doubt I love this land,
God bless the USA.

Tog:  Funny video.  The other?  Not so much.  I'd rather just read a trail sign.

Majortoto:  Well, we're getting somewhere.  At least I understood your last two posts!  Nicely done.   Who knows, maybe one day I'll even agree with something you say.

Good Night.  And God Bless The United States of America.

I'm officially retiring from this thread.

Believe it or not, this thread has been helpful!  I'm resolving to not care, ever, if anybody is using techno any place, anywhere.  I honestly am not going to let myself be annoyed.

I went to a restaurant this morning where a woman was at her table loudly talking on a cell.  She adjusted her volume.  And I told myself that I won't care even if she doesn't.

I'm not changing my standards for my students, or my family.  No.  Absolutely not.   But for anyone else?  It's mighty liberating to not care what they do.

I think from now on whenever I enter a restaurant or a train or a bus or a chair lift, I'm going to tell myself that I'm entering Grand Guignol Theatre of the Absurd.  And then I'm going to sit back and just accept and watch and listen to whatever happens.

So now, officially, truly, I retire from this thread.

Happy Skiing!

I agree.  When you're trying to read or you want to relax it's real annoying listening to that click, click click. click-click-click.  Click.  Click-click-click.  Click, click, click.  Click-click-click-click-click.  And of course experiencing the elbow and the vibration in the seat as they feverishly pound these keys.  (So much for people sitting quietly and not bothering others while using their techno.)

Oh my God! Don't even get me started on people's heavy breathing!!!

You can hear the loud whistle of air trying to escape their airway like a mini-tornado!

When you're trying to read or you want to relax it's real annoying listen to people blowing up a small typhoon next to you!

That's the definition of what this thread should have been about. Not cell phones. Not texting on the lifts. But stupid, unnecessary, gratuitous technology sneaking its way into skiing (and other sports that don't need it, for that matter) for no better reason than that to be techy, geeky and "cool".  Why the hell would you fumble around with your iPhone and take a picture of a trail to get the trail name? There's probably a wooden sign right out of view that has the name of the trail right on it. How lost and mindless do you have to be to need an app like that?

I could see its uses.  It doesn't take a picture, rather makes use of the camera, compass, and GPS abilities of the phone to figure out where you are, and where the trails on the mountain are relative to your location.  I personally wouldn't bother with it, but I could see how some people may want to use it to find a trail they're looking for or to avoid certain trails (black diamonds for example).  Flat 2D trail maps most of the time are pretty confusing.  The mountain is never laid out the way you think it is based on just looking at a trail map.

If you can ski the mountain though..then why bother...just look around and find what looks fun to ski.

If you don't know where you're going, you might not get there.

Actually, this looks pretty awesome. If you're not sure where any "hidden" runs are, you could use this app to find them. It makes me wish I had an iphone.

I suppose you and I would disagree on the meanings of "awesome" and "unnecessary and geeky." I'd classify fiddling around with my iPhone and new apps instead of just riding the mountain in the latter. If you want to find a "hidden" run, communicate with real human beings and find one.

What can I say -- some people find technology really challenging. I won't begrudge them their old ways if they don't begrudge me the opportunity to make my life easier.

A new app is hardly a reason for people to get their undies all knotted up.

finally got a iphone, got one given to me by a student who wanted to get the latest model. I was so excited, thinking of the things I could do with it. Fact is, I don't know what to do with it, and it sits in the drawer. Looks cool though.

If you happen to be next to a ski patrol or someone who knows the mountain (and all the names of the trails/lifts), this is obviously the best option.  My experience is that most of the people on the mountain are vacationers.  It could get old trying to ask like 10 different groups of people where a trail is.  I've had many people ask me where things are when I go out west only to reply...sorry..I have no idea, my first time here too.  =)  In fact, even at my local ski hill, I don't even know all the trail names.  I know where everything is, but if someone asked me where a trail named "blah blah blah" is...I would have no idea which one they're referring to.

I don't know, usually within a lift ride or two, I come across a local or at least someone that travels to the destination regularly/has a vacation spot there. I do tend to ski more local mountains, but even at big destinations (Copper, Stowe, Steamboat, etc.) locals weren't too hard to come by.

Point being, I'd take tried-and-true local knowledge over standing around snapping photos with some stupid app any day of the season.

Agreed, if you talk to people on a chair lift, you should come across locals and hopefully pick their brain.  Sometimes you get lucky and get someone very pleasant who will also hint you in on the secret stashes.  There's plenty of time on the lift to talk about stuff.  Definitely a lot more useful and fun than a phone.  Who knows, they might even guide you there.

On the other hand, if you're on vacation with family or friends and always riding up the chairlift with the same people, you won't have this opportunity.  If I put myself in those shoes(boots), and I manage to pick out a knowledgeable person on the hill, I figure most people want to just ski and would rather not spend their time explaining to me how to get to certain places.  Even if that person doesn't mind, I would feel like I'm being a hassle and would rather avoid bugging them.

As I said before, personally I wouldn't bother with it, but I think there's still plenty of situations where the augmented reality technology can come in handy for certain people.

btw,  the app doesn't "snap pictures".  It just borrows the camera's lens to show what you're pointing at so it can overlay the trail information on top of it in real time.  I'm an engineer and so I have a tendency to be intrigued by innovative implementation of technology, regardless of its applications.  It's technology and creative thinking like this that opens up the gateway to other developments that may appeal to wider audiences.

I half expected a texter to crash into the APS idiot. Explain that one to the Ski Patrol!!! LMAO.....more useless tech on the hill?

Tog, I loved the YouTube.

Kind of funny. I ended up in this thread while searching for a cool Android Skiing app ;-)

Here my 2 cents. I am grumpy and with 40+ I am an old man. I killed my old cell after 5 years of use, and since there was this waterproof toy phone called DEFY with Android, why not. Yes, I listen to music on my phone forever, always have as I don't want to stuff money up this Apple's guy's ass ... ah well. However these new gadgets are actually way to usefull. You can e-mail on the ski-lift and process your work-e-mail, prentending to actually work. You can order the carry-out food on your way back online (don't need to bother your wife at home). There is this road biking app that swears at you if you are to slow uphill. Overall a lot of really usefull things. What you make out of it is your preference.

I do however really hate those folks who constantly have to brag about their toys. They fall usually into the same category as those who need to have boot and glove warmers.

So folks who brag about toys have cold hands and feet.  I never would have thought of that.  Does that mean that bragging causes ones feet and hands to feel cold, or is it cold feet and hands cause bragging?  I think some research is required here.

Well technically he said they "fall into the same category" not that they are the same.  So what category is that?

Annoying people?

Cold braggarts?

Well just read the fine print on the Hotronics Boot Heaters:

"Use of this product may cause incessant talking about this and other electronic devices. Do not use if you have Laryngitis."
