Exam Ski Recommendations - CSIA 3 / CSCF 2

Hi Guys,

Hoping you could give me some recommendations for a new exam ski, I'm planning on taking my CSIA 3 and CSCF 2 development level this year.

I'm 5'10 180lbs, and have took all my previous exams on 165 Fischer RX8s, which I love, but I think I'm going to need something a bit stiffer, and it's also been suggested I get something with a larger turn radius to better demonstrate skills.

I also ski a lot on 182 Scott Punishers, but again they're a pretty small turn radius.

I'm in Fernie, so hopefully lots of soft snow / bumps this year, and not too much ice to deal with.

Was thinking maybe 172 Contact 4x4s, but any suggestions for other skis to watch gear swap for would be appreciated.

What are peoples thoughts on the progressor 8/9, how do they compare to rx8s?

Thanks,

Dan

I got Progressor 9s for my level 3 in NZ this year and really liked them. I'm taller than you, but a similar weight, and the 170s were ideal. Missed having a proper slalom ski for some things, but the progressors were much more versatile.

Don't they require you to have both SL and GS race skis for the CSCF Level 2 and higher certifications, anymore?  They did, way back when I did it, but I've been out of the loop for years.

I also just got new Progressor 9s, and am hoping to take my PSIA L2 at the end of this season if I can hack it.  They are OUTSTANDING skis for skill demonstrations on packed/hard surfaces, as you can easily make both long- and short-radius turns, and they are responsive at both low and high speeds.  I was previously on the equivalent of the current Dynastar Contact Cross -- either that or the 4x4 are also probably excellent choices.  I just liked the Progressor's feel more, especially at speed.  (The Contacts can get a little unstable at high speed.)

However, the soft snow performance of the Progressors may leave something to be desired.  Narrow + heavy => flotation: not so much.  If it's just "soft" groomed snow, or fresh snow over a packed-down base, they'll still work well.

If you want something a little wider but still technically-oriented, the Head Supershape Titan might be an interesting choice.  I haven't skied it myself, though.

exracer is right. For the CSCF 2 (more properly known as Development Level now), you'll need GS and SL skis. Don't have to be race stock, and you could get away with a cheater GS (maybe even something like a Progressor 9), but you'll definitely want something with a real slalom shape. If you don't race regularly (and it sounds like you probably don't), you're probably better off finding someone to borrow some race skis from.

As for the CSIA 3, that's a little more up to personal preference, but the suggestions so far are good. I'd worry less about small vs. big radius and find a ski that works for you.
