I’m looking to get a set of skis of my own and I need some help. I go skiing approximately 4-5 times per year.
I live in Knoxville, Tennessee, so the places I go are usually in the North Carolina area. My family also has a time share at Massanutten ski resort in Virginia that we go to every year, and we also go to Ober Gatlinburg every year too. So I’m not really going anywhere advanced. I am what I would call between the beginner and intermediate levels as far as skill goes. I am 5’1”, approximately 115-120 pounds, and I’m 23 years old so I’m not going to grow anymore. I desperately want to get away from renting crappy over-worn skis wherever I go. I don’t need anything too top-of-the-line. This is just a recreational hobby for me, and I’m not too serious about it. I go with my family for fun, but frankly the diamonds and even some of the blues scare me to death.
I was having a hard time maneuvering last year and the resort staff put me in a set of 130’s. I liked the flexibility and speed I could achieve on those, but my brother is telling me those are too small for me for an everyday ski. I think I need to be around a 140-150 size, but I really don’t know.
I have been looking at the Roxy Hocus Pocus skis with N9 bindings in a 148. Can anyone provide some educated feedback on the quality of a Roxy ski, and what you think about that size and ski type for me? My brother says Roxy skis wouldn’t be his top choice…do you all agree? Also, I don’t have boots yet, and I know that’s probably even more important than the ski, but I have no idea where to start. Can anyone recommend a good (but relatively cheap) boot for me also? I am not looking for the best of the best, just anything that is of better quality of the average rental.
Thanks a lot!
