im looking for some in put on which ski would be a better fit, i would get them in 165.  i plan on spending a bit more time on the back side and in the trees than on the front.  i would say im above average skier but am no pro.  i plan on being on the mtn alot this winter so my skill level will be better than where i started, or at least thats the idea.  thanks for any help and advice i get, have a safe season!

From your Avatar you look more like a 178 than a 165. Specialy if you spend more time on the backside. Just saying.

Also Search! This has been discussed like 20 times before.

+1 on length.  Mythic is better for backside if you have the skills to drive it.  Search for the past threads on that ski.

fyi - i have 178 mythic w/ bindings in excellent condition that I'm likely putting up for sale shortly. Great ski - no real reason I'm parting with it aside from newskiitis which has gotten the better of me and my closet is a bit overfull.

Im leaning towards the sultans, all ive heard is good things about them.  Im now debating on the size.  I've been doing most of my skiing in the midwest with a few trips a year out west.  My "avatar" is 5'8" and 170, and am a pretty good skiier for the midwest, midwest is the key word.  Im heading out west for the winter to do as much skiing as possible.  Id like to get into more of the back side than i have done in the past.  Im currently skiing atomic m11 (164) and really liked them for where i ski.  If i do more off piste sking i should problably be skiing longer skis, but how much longer is the question. once again thanks for the all the help!

The Sultan and the Mythic are two pretty different skis. While the Mythic is possibly the best 88mm crud buster I've ever been on, it is not as user friendly or versatile as the Sultan for most skiers. As in all things, there are tradeoffs but in general, the Sultan is a better choice for most skiers most of the time. Given your size and intended usage, the minimum length you'd want is the 172 and the 178 is not out of line.

If you are going to spend the whole year out west, I wouldn't be afraid to look into the Sultan 94.

I was on the 178 Mythic last season.  I let them go at the end and am now wishing I had kept them and sold my Jet Fuels.  Never skied the Sultan, but the Mythic was very versatile and would work for a strong skier as a single ski quiver.  I think you would want either the Mythic or the Sultan in a 178 and not a 165.  I am 5'10 and 165 lbs.  I demoed both the 172 and the 178 Mythic.  For me the 178 was better although the 172 was OK.

You definitely want a 172 minimum.  I'm 5'8" 150-155lbs and I just bought a sultan 85 in 178.  I'm a midwest skier as well and this will be my out west ski.  I'm no expert, but would consider myself an advanced skier...comfortable going down just about anything (might not be pretty looking) out west except dropping cliffs and shooting couliers.

From what I heard, the 172 is slightly better for shorter snappier turns on groomed and easier to maneuver in bumps/trees.  The 178 will be better for larger GS type turns on groomed and better in pow/crud.

Both those lengths should be pretty good.

I am 5'10 and 190lbs and have loved my 184 Mythic Riders for the last two seasons, as a daily driver for Mammoth. As everyone has said, for off piste, maybe a little powder, go longer. 172 would be as short as I would recommend and if you are a decent skier looking to up your game this season, I would say definitely get the 178. As SJ mentioned, the 94 waist Sultan is a darn nice ski, but really, I use the 88 waist MR as a daily driver and love it in up to about 6" of fresh snow. Deeper and I want my Praxis Back Country's on. You can normally score great deals on the MR on Ebay, I don't know about this time of year though. Try www.thefind.com to shop for each ski and see what pops up.

Have fun shopping as either ski would be great IMO.
