Looking at Wintergreen for Sunday.... But, currently forecasting 30% chance of rain for Sunday. (50% Saturdayfrown.gif).  Will watch and see.  I can live with 30% or less, especially if it might actually be snow at skiing elevation.th_dunno-1[1].gif

Cant say I did not warn you smile.gif .  They could really make that 100 times easier with minimal effort.

Wowzers.  Beech might not be the place to go over the Holiday break!  I'm going to be at Elk Mountain in PA this weekend, so hopefully the lines aren't that bad... :-/

Looking like the rain will be gone by the time I get there... about noon.  They have half day (4 hour) tickets tomorrow.  I'll probably have Oleg with me.  He's a good solid skier with a racing background, grew up in Russia (USSR).  He lurks here but doesn't post.

I have yellow caution tape on my poles and an Epicski sticker on my helmet,

Wintergreen is about 3 hours and 15 minutes from Raleigh.  Wednesday would probably be a very good day to ski WG.  I won't be able to make it, but skier219 might be interested in skiing with you mid week at WG.

I was at Sugar Wednesday and Thursday, it was PACKED in the afternoon. Got there early for races so missed most of the crowds.

The Southeast needs another good ski area, it appears.

I got there Friday.  Spent the day helping some of our friends' kids learn how to ski. They did a great job and were doing linked wedge turns down the greens after just a few runs (most of the rest of the day was spent in line for the lifts).  Got to make one run from the top of the mountain at 4:00, but they were grooming Whoopdedoo (why couldn't they wait until 4:30?) and took Tom instead.  Skiis felt real sloppy and it wasn't until I was halfway down the mountain when I realized that I had never buckled my boots!  Oh well.  Hope to make it up again soon.

Looks like I'm locked in for Sugar Mtn, next wed the 12th.  Anyone want to join.  Looks like the weather/conditions should be good.  Snow on Tues / Wed ... hopefully.  I plan to leave my parents' house in West Knoxville by 5:30am.  That should put me up there by 9:00.

Sugar skied pretty well today.  It snowed at least 5 inches while we were there between 9:45 and 3:40.  This was my first trip there and I enjoyed it.  The only complaint about today is that it was very very windy.  The fresh snow was wind blown in some places so the conditions were veriable, but pretty good in most places.

Their website said 22" in the last 24 hours.  Beech's said they have 8' so far this year.  Unbelievable for North Carolina.

yeah, there were really nice piles of soft snow on Tom Terrific, but things were very windblown making surface conditions variable.  Deep softness was found near the tree lines and in the few places where you were allowed to ski under the lifts.

So, on Wed, the weather was very grey, snowy and windy.  You might describe it as ominous.  I was riding up the lift that takes you to the top of Big Red for the first time ever, when through the grey clouds I noticed something to my left (lookers left on the chair).  In the grey swirling weather, it looked like a prison, or maybe some kind of institution.  It definately gave me the creeps every time I went up there.  So, I looked it up after and found out that it's some kind of condo tower.  What an eye sore.  Definately not what I epected to see in a mountain/wilderness environment.  I did look it up that evening and found this:  http://www.sugartop.com/about.htm  No wonder it was controversial.  It looks so out of place.

Another general observation, there seemed to be a disproportionate amount of slope side lodging.   I guess if there were people in all of those condos and they all showed up to ski on the same day, the relatively small Sugar montain would be very crowded.  Fortunately for me, the wind and the very cold temps and the weekday, kept the crowds away and we skied up and onto all lifts all day long.

I've been to Sugar once and am not sure I get the place. That condo you speak of is an enormous eyesore.  I can't imaging what was in their head when they built that thing.  The weekend we were there the slopes were a madhouse with people who had no idea how to ski straightlining from top to bottom.  The lift lines were 20-30 minutes long and it looked like a garbage dump under on the ride up there were so many beer cans/bottles and cigarette packs under the lifts.

I can see the place being popular with the locals and if you are only a few hours away, but I don't get the condos and all.  If you already are going to pay for a condo and their rather high price/low value lift tickets, you might as well go to Colorado or Utah.  I can be in Denver in not much more time than it takes me to drive to Sugar from Atlanta and plane tickets are relatively inexpensive.

HAHAHA I hear ya that is one interesting building at the top. When I fly into Charlotte I always look for it cause when you see it you know 25 minutes to down. The weekend is a zoo for sure, during the week though its the opposite. not alot of folks and really is OK skiing. I tend to do day trips and I get more runs in half a day then you would all weekend.

Atlanta is a bit far for a day trip I understand, you do have a resort in Maggie vally and its ok also ( only been 2 times)

Anyone know how Sugar or Beech fared in the "wintry mix" over the last day or so?  If conditions are good, I am at least considering heading up for the day tomorrow.

I heard that they did OK.  I'm heading up to Beech with a few people from work on 2/3.
