Just a thought for today.

My apologies if this could be in a better place, but after an impeccably observed two minutes' silence at 11am today, in memory of those who gave everything in the Great War and since:

They went with songs to the battle, they were young.
Straight of limb, true of eyes, steady and aglow.
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted,
They fell with their faces to the foe.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them.

On the ride into town today, I reminded my 17 year old son what day it was. I encouraged him to think of those, many his tender age, who gave all there was to give. We talked about our family's service to country in each generation, going back not so far as many, but at least 100 years to his great-grandfather who was in the calvary. I reminded him that the one thing in armed conflict that has not changed in that century, and remains immutable, is the color of spilled blood and the finality of that ultimate committment to our nation.
