Business cards- copyrights?

I'm going to get some business cards made up for the upcoming season, since in the past there have been countless times I with I had some. I'm with NZSIA, not PSIA, so can't just get them from the body like PSIA members can.

Anyway, I'm going to put the NZSIA logo on it, and want to also put a small logo of the mountain which I work at. Any legal issues with putting the resort logo on there? Don't want to get a whole batch printed and find out I can't use them.

You resort should supply them I would think... is that not common practice to receive business cards from the ski school?

Shouldn't you ask the resort that?  It's their logo.  Who knows, they might like the idea and provide for all instructors.

My "resort" does not allow us to use their logo on our cards.  Nor do they supply them.  I make my own with a PSIA logo.

I would guess it's down to individual resorts, why not just email your ski school director and ask?

From a legal perspective, it's definitely up to the owner of the copyright (ie, the owner of the ski resort).

In theory, you should get approval from NZSIA as well, unless they tell you up front that you can use their logo on business cards if you're a member.

Actually, this reminds me that I need to order some PSIA business cards for this season...

I order mine from Vista Print.  I get 1000 Premium cards for $13.00.   They have card stock options with skiers or snowboarders for no extra charge.  A logo upload is $5.   Choose the slow shipping - they still show up in about a week.

Great question and great answers so far. My 2 cents on the the logo issue is that you should ask for permission (and could easily be told no), but if you don't ask, then the odds of getting in trouble are slim to none. The usual concern over logo usage that it's done correctly (i.e. with high quality and the right colors). It's hard for a resort to complain about your card if yours are better than theirs.

I have a page on my web site that might be helpful:

I talked to my resort, and they were fine with it. They even supplied me with some high quality jpegs of their logo. I like how it turned out, just got sent a proof today and told them to print 500.
