Ski trail maps on Google Maps?

I know there are many GPS-based ski trail map apps out there for mobile phones, but I was wondering if people have attempted using custom-made Google My Maps as a free, perhaps better, alternative.

You can use the drawing tools within Google Maps to draw lines to designate slopes (with different colors to match the difficulty of the slopes) and put bubbles to designate restaurants, lodges, etc.  Such map can be viewed as a layer in Google Maps for Mobile and can even be shared publicly.  What I think is especially attractive about using Google Maps for ski trails is that you can put the trails overlay on top of the Google Maps satellite view, which I think will make the trail maps even more realistic than commercial apps, which do not have the satellite view feature.  In addition, unlike commercial solutions that can only be used on one platform, these maps can be shared across the board (be it Windows Mobile, iPhone or Android) as long as Google Maps for Mobile can be run.

So, are there Google Maps-based ski trail maps already? If not, is it a bad idea to start making them?

Indeed it has been done.  The best example I know of was created by Craig Morrison of the Fernie Alpine Resort in B.C.

By clicking on a trial you get a pop-up with trail descriptions and photos.

It really is an amazing bit of work.

The link is at: http://www.redtree.com/far#googlemap and is well worth a look if you or anyone else wants to see how this can be done.

At Whistler they even have "Street View" for some of the runs.  They set up the Google Street View Cameras on a snowmobile and drove around....great idea, others are already doing it.  Could be some money to be made if you do it well.

Yes, that's exactly what I had in mind.  I also found a Google Earth/Map of Steamboat (http://my.steamboat.com/forum/topics/steamboat-trail-map-on-google).  I wonder why there hasn't been a concerted effort within the skiing community to produce these kinds of maps, which will come in very handy in the mountains.  I've seen such efforts in the running, biking or hiking communities.

Thought I would do a self-plug smile.gif

I have done a Google Earth website for Whistler Blackcomb. You can see it here

Cheers!

These are the pioneers - even though we don't create the maps we spread the news.  The Fernie Map is down-loadable on to a smart phone & the Whistler map is visually beautiful but seems (at least to me) to lack run descriptions.  Eventually all of this will be worked out & a standard will be created.
