Great advice, take it to heart. I went to AK in 95 with some buddies who had been there before and we stayed down in Valdez and bought heli time as and when we could fly. Out of 6 days there we could only fly about 2.5 days because of wind/storm so a lot of time spent drinking/cat skiing (low angle) skiing the pass/hanging out etc. IIRC heli time with Coombs and Conway then was ~ $300/day for 6 flights. A fabulous experience but the hanging about/down-time was a PITA when i had travelled from the UK to heli-ski.
Even by their own admission, Alaska heli outfits only fly 50% of the time, so look for a place with down day options. Chugach Powder Guides out of the Alyeska Resort gives you the option of backup cat or area skiing if they can't fly, which beats ping pong and running up a bar tab with some of the the far north operations. When its good, it is off the freaking scale, but it is an expensive gamble.
