This year's trip was an 18 day/225 mile raft and dory float down the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon. The trip started during a 25 year major weather event that dumped tons of ran and 4 tornadoes hit near Flagstaff. The rim pour off and water falls were a rare and awesome site. All of the side canyons flashed and one happened 50 yards from us during a lunch stop. Damn incredible. Due to the rain and erosion the water was muddy, which added 'weight' when hit by waves and splashes during rapid runs.
I had the added benefit of honing my rowing skills in the boat of a long time boatman who provided passionate private instructions. He ran the big ones, but I got to ramp it up in many of the hundreds of rapids we ran,
Here's a taste of a skilled dory boatman through Upset Rapid on one of the boats he built:
More to follow as time allows....and if I can figure out how to add video clips and slideshows without YouTube.
