Help me decide: Dynastar Legend Sultan 85 vs Volkl AC50

I'm 42 years old, 5'9" and 165 lbs. Was a ski racer in college (slalom and GS) 20+ years ago and ski 10-15 days a year now, half in the US northeast, half out west. I still ski aggressively and spend most of the time going as fast as I possibly can on groomed runs carving big GS turns. I'm not afraid of speed. I will still jump in the moguls if the snow is not too hard. When out west, like to ski off-piste, steeps and back country. And, of course, powder if I get lucky.

I currently ski a 7 year old pair of Volkl G31 in 193 cm. I'm trying to decide between the Sultan 85 and the AC50. Size would be 177 or 178 cm.

Thanks for reading, and thanks for your replies.

(Disclaimer: I have not skied either)

Now, from what I've heard, the volkls are planks.  Perfect for railing carved turns on hardpack at gs speeds and radii.  It also supposedly kinda sucks off piste, as it's too stiff.  The stiffness could help with charging crud though.

Apparently, the sultans are on the other end of the spectrum.  A bit softer, MUCH better off piste.  Especially good in moguls, better than the AC50 in powder, and still carves well.

Just my $0.02

Have not skied the Sultans, but the AC50 would make a great eastern ski.  In comparison I'm 190 lbs. a bit older than you, and skied AC50 in a 185.

Skied the AC50 at Crystal in 18" of 2 day old cascade cement and groomers.  They are not a super powder ski, but they worked okay.  They get dissed all the time for loose snow capabilities but with decent technique they work.  Great ski on the groomers but not the quickest bump ski.  These beasts really do like fast.

Thanks everyone for your input.

I decided on the Sultan 85s and bought them in 178cm size.

You made the right choice.  I've skied both in the conditions that you described and the Sultan 85s were much more enjoyable.  That's a great ski.
