I know I have good fitting boots but I've been having some issues that I'm certain were my fault, so thanks for this article.  Wish I had noticed it sooner.  Anyone else read this and feel like an idiot afterwards?

Stephen,  hopefully you can further insight here.

 

Not being a trained boot fitter, I have a question re the sequence as described (assuming 4 buckle boots numbered as noted by you).

 

The way the shell and cuff is constructed,  I would have thought the reverse of the sequence would be correct, for the following reason:

 

Buckle 4 slightly tightens the area above the toes

Buckle 3 slightly pre tightens the instep area and pre-closes the shell under the cuff.

Buckle 2 tightens the lower cuff and closes the shell pulling on the instep and seating the heel in the pocket.

Bucklle 1 tightens the cuff.

 

Buckles 2,3 and 4  should be snug.

Buckle 1 tight.

 

All final tightening is primarily between buckles 1 and 2.

 

Sorry that I'm asking as the logic seems to indicate that this should work better. (I'm looking at it from an engineering/construction point of view)

 

I would appreciate to understand why this is wrong? (Possible most skiers over tighten Buckle 3 and 4 in the above mentioned sequence).  I'm sure that I'm missing something here.

 

All the other steps and tricks are very clearly stated and agree full heartedly.

Do what ever works. 

 

Any system is better than no system. 

 

Yesterday, a guy came in complaining about forefoot pain.  He was hammering is forefoot with the front two buckles.  I see it at least two or three times a day.  No wonder his foot was killing him.  He was DOA before even hitting the slopes.  The boot fit was pretty nice, but it was so tight on the forefoot it had nowhere to go but to the red line in the pain department.

 

Flat out, I asked him if he needed that much compression for control.  I gave him a visual demonstration on Low Hanging Fruit and he was a happy camper.  There was no way he was a good enough skier to need that much pressure on the forefoot.

 

It's raging snowing right now and I believe these issues are best contemplated on a chairlift between powder runs!

All great (sic) minds have an oddball trait they are passionate about. If my call to greatness is manifested by being a funky zealot for donning ski boots is cool w/ me.

Thanks guys for keeping this alive. I believe it is an essential public service.

Your forefoot can only handle so much. In a properly fit boot, the shell width and forefoot should be so well married the front buckles are unnecessary. Neuromas, calluses, cold feet, soft corns and evils of similar ilk lurk in the tight forefoot.

This all becomes a lot more simple in a 2 buckle boot like the Solly Ghost. biggrin.gif

Tried a pair, didn't like them. Tried the Solly SPKs as well, didn't like them. Then again, my feet are fairly narrow, so not a perfect fit. My current boots are too wide, so I have to crank the forefoot as tight as it goes to keep my foot in place. 1 month until new boots, no more less sore feet.

So I'm confused by what this means: 

 

"I like to tell stronger skiers, ;No more than two fingers of pressure!;. If you have to use anything more than two fingers of pressure to get a firm snug fit, talk to your bootfitter and see what can be done to take up some volume in the forefoot area."

 

Two fingers on what? Two fingers pushing the buckle down? Two fingers between something? What exactly?

Two fingers pushing the buckle down is how I read it (and do it). If you're cranking, then there's been some liner pack out that you're trying to compensate for.
