Early in the days of working with Epicski, I had an opportunity to get to know many of the folks on this thread, but those that I haven't met, my name is Dan Gill; I'm the co-founder and CEO over at Huddler.
I just wanted to jump in here briefly to hopefully humanize the situation a little bit and dispel a bit of the mis-information that may get lost in translation with cut and pasted content and limited context.
Epicski was the first site that Huddler ever partnered with - we've had an opportunity to get to know Nolo, Ridge Hippie, TrekChick, Philpug, Cgeib, Weems, Cirquerider, and many others personally. We will be forever indebted to Epic for helping us get our start, and for helping me develop a rapidly growing skiing addiction (http://www.epicski.com/forum/thread/102712/epic-trip-to-big-sky).
I just wanted to make that clear that the entire Huddler team understands the value of our users. We're focused on building the best experience possible to help you connect with one another, and for others to benefit from the incredible knowledge you all share in the community. It definitely feels like that hasn't come through clearly here.
We are incredibly proud of the platform we've built from scratch, but no one at Huddler would ever try to claim it's perfect. As long as your wishlists are for improving the platform, I can assure you that ours is 10x longer...we're far from satisfied. We employ a very talented team of engineers, designers, and product managers experienced at companies like Ebay, Yahoo, Shopping.com, Epinions, Slide, Google and others, all of whom have been hacking in some form or another nearly their entire lives, and we work full time on this.
If it comes across as hand-wavy when we try to explain that the engineering team is buried and that this change is more complex than it seems, we apologize, but it actually is. We have no desire to lie to you all in hopes that you'll simply go away. Making a column narrower is a relatively obvious fix (the site used to work exactly as Walt's fix describes, but we had user revolts about the incredible waste of space in the right column, so we changed it to this way.) What's not as easy is that not every user wants it that way, so we have to make the change dependent on our groups structure, create a permission for it, create UI for users to be able to select their preference, etc...it's all completely doable and reasonable, but there's more than meets the eye and we have to prioritize it relative to the dozens of other EpicSki projects and the hundreds of requests for the Platform from other sites. Also, it's worth noting that it's not hard because our CSS doesn't have line-breaks and we can't find the code; the file you're seeing is a condensed file to reduce size in the interest of page speed - this is not our engineers' first rodeo
Anyway, just wanted to chime in. We're sorry that this has been so frustrating to several of Epic's most valuable contributors. We're working on a fix to make the width a user-selectable preference, and agree that in the ideal world the column will flex with the width of your pages. We'll be as communicative as possible to Nolo about the progress. Thanks.
