Got a good parking spot last weekend... No buses coming for the day so we got directed by an employee into the bus parking area.
What I like is that when you put the seats down in the back it makes a perfectly flat surface with no gaps.
1995 Jeep Cherokee XJ. 3.5 inch Superlift. 32" All terrians and mud terrians. 4.56 Gears, Detriot EZ Locker in Rear. Smittybuilt front bumper, Safari rack. Built by Burnsville Offroad in MN. Had 192k when I put it into retirement. High School-Freshmen year of college ski rig.
1998 Ford Explorer 5.0 Liter, 4 speed auto, Awd 3.73s with 31" all terrians. Retired with 150k on it. Freshmen year thru graduation of college ski rig.
New Ski Rig: 2010 Ford F150 5.4 Liter, 6 speed auto, 4x4, 3.55s. Has 1800 miles on it. My "Grown up ski rig" 2010-2015.
Someone has to rock the Gas Hogs....
This past season I ran my Mud truck (jeep) as a ski rig as I decided to keep the F150 out of the snow.
This is my mud truck/hunting truck.
1993 Jeep Cherokee 2 Door. 4.0 Liter, 5 Speed. Dana 44 rear with discs. 4.88 gears front and rear. Detriot Lockers front and rear. Has ski plates and rocker rock guards. I use this when there aren't roads. 150 miles to a tank of fuel well 13 gallons of 16. Worked great when there was 10-12 inches of snow on the roads this winter. I was the only one on the roads.
I'm about to pull the trigger on a Pilot... using the new addition to the family as an excuse but really I just want 4WD. ;-) How do you like it so far?
We don't have a pilot, but we bought a 2008 MDX (mechanically identical or nearly so) with 38k on it in December and have put another 12k on it since. It's a great ski car, I've got to say. Drive feel is closest to an Audi. Ground clearance is within a quarter inch of our 2004 Suburban (well, until you drop the 'Burban into 4LO and the air suspension puffs up). With decent M&S rated tires, we had no problems getting around the 800" Tahoe got this year. Honestly, my only two complaints are that the FM radio doesn't display data (artist, song, station, etc.), and the passenger seat lacks adjustable lumbar support. (And yes, that's the opposite of damning with faint praise.)
It is a great SUV! Only thing I would change is to have the luggage rack a bit more forward (my Thule box sits way back).
We must have a different radio since we do get the artist and song name.
Decided to go for the 2011 Honda Pilot... just this past weekend. With all of that space in the back I'm looking forward to not having the tips of my skis hit me in the elbow during those long drives up to Tahoe.
Okay, so I know, I'm Packasport -- and that's a Packasport on top of my car -- but I'm not trolling. You ask what do I take to the mountain? We love our Jetta Sportwagon. Also big fan of the Audi wagons and the 2012 and newer Subarus. Wagon's can't be beat.
This has been my ski rig...17" summer tires and all.
Unfortunately it is going away. It's just not practical for transporting a child in a car seat or skis. It's being replaced with the hand me down 2011 Mazda CX-9 that use to be my wife's car.
