175 or 185 Volki Kuros for 6'3" and 195lbs?

Hey guys-

I'm looking for some advice on ski length.  I'm on my second season back on skis, after a few seasons off for a knee surgery and a few seasons before that on a snowboard.  I'm 6'3" and 195lbs.  I currently have a set of 178 Fischer Wateas in 94mm width, and 185 Rossignol Phantoms in 108mm width.  To be honest, I ski the Wateas pretty well, but am pretty terrible on the Phantoms.  I'm fighting tip dive the entire time and am unstable and somewhat grumpy on them.  I think I bit off more than I can chew - they are kickass at 25+mph on untracked stuff and above the treeline, but frankly sucky in the trees and at low speed.

After a lot of searching, I think I'm going to get a 50% off 2010 Kuro, but am unsure of length.  I assume 185, since I'm relatively tall and heavy?  I'm going on a cat trip this year in BC, which is the primary reason I'm getting the ski, and a few mornings in Tahoe on big dumps, before switching to the Wateas when it gets tracked out.  Is there any reason I should go with a 175 instead?

Also, is the Kuro a bad choice?  If so, what would be another good choice for primarily catskiing?  I'd like to keep it around $600 if possible.  I'm a decent skiier - comfortable with prettymuch any line anywhere on the backside with a few 5' drops here and there, but nothing big, fast, or super gnarly.  Noone's gonna turn around on a lift to be stoked for me, but noone is gonna turn around and laugh at me, if that makes sense.

Thanks!

yep

there is no reason for you to be on the 175.

+1 on the 185

I would not recommend longer on that ski. Unlike the step up from 185-ish to 195-ish sizes in some other "similar" skis, I found the step to the 195 Kuro represents a big jump in "heaviness" of feel and performance without a commensurate benefit in control or other aspects of feel. I'll probably play with the 195 Kuro a bit more this season, but for now, I'd say the sweet spot of that ski for most skiers is the 185.

The Kuro is a fine choice. IMO it is on the short list of excellent candidates for what you describe. A couple others that pop to my mind might be Praxis Protests (or even Powders) or K2 Pontoons. But I would not stress over it.

As always, the advice is worth what you paid for it

I got the 185s, and rode em for the first time last week in 20"+ of Sierra Cement.  They were so easy to toss around it was unreal.  I couldn't bury the tips as hard as I tried.  I could literally bunny hop around in waist deep drifts like I was on a trampolene.  Thanks for the recommendations, I'm really really happy on em.
