K2 Hardside vs. Volkl Gotama or Mantra

I need some advice. I ski primarily in the Pacific NW. I can ski anything and prefer off-piste, powder and steep. I avoid the terrain park and trick skiing. I'm 5'11 and 175lbs. I have the opportunity to buy K2 Hardsides (2009, length 174) at a good price, but I want to be sure that I'm getting the best ski. I keep hearing about the Gotama and Mantra. Any thoughts?

My first thought is that the 174 will be too  short.

Better comparisons are:

Volkl Gotama= K2 Sidestash

Volkl mantra= k2 Hardside.

They may seem similar on paper, but both the volkls have a very different feel to the  k2's. Especially the gotama.

Sounds like you lean toward Volkls? The only worry I have is about stability of the Gotamas with the rounded tail.

Yes, I personally prefer the volkls, but thats not the case with everyone.  Goats are plenty stable.

I have skied all three and owned the Mantra and older Gotama. Given your conditions, I'd choose the Hardside but the 174 is too short go for the 181. Here is a relative ranking for different conditions.

Soft snow (powder)

(1) Gotama

(2) Hardside

(3) Mantra

Soft Snow (crud and chop)

(1) Hardside

(2) Mantra

(3) Gotama

Packed Conditions (soft)

(1) Hardside

(2) Mantra

(3) Gotama

Packed Conditions (firm)

(1) Mantra

(2) Hardside

(3) Gotama

I'm the same size as the OP and am considering the Hardside.  I'm leaning toward the 174s because of tight eastern trees and bumps.  How are they in bumps btw?

I've tried the new Mantras and liked them.  Does the Hardside have a similar damp and stable feel?
