Here is a question for the wax experts: Has anyone every tried different methods of preparing new skis and then cut open the bases to see what works best? I figure sawing open the base is the only way to "see" how far the wax penetrates into the base, and to know how many layers of wax (or time in the hot box) is helpful and how many is myth.
Hot box, wax on layers, does it matter?

there has been some research done with weighing the base material to show the amount of penetration of hot boxing wax and ironing in. the more wax that has penetrated the the base, the heavier the p-tex became. at one time this info was available from toko's website on their hotbox page. ultimately you can get ironed in wax to penetrate as much as the hotboxed wax. it just takes more time. if you have the time, knock yourself out.
getting a visual on base material and penetration depth is probably not doable.
