Hey guys sorry I haven't been on in a while, been wicked busy at work and on the hill...

  • Vibe - I was a passholder at Gore for a few years...place felt like a geriatric ward.  I also had a pass at West Mountain for weeknight turns last winter.  That place was so awful, I couldn't force myself to go and took a real bath on that pass.  Everyone I met at Magic was all about the skiing and the laid back vibe that defines the place.  The guys that define the vibe are always willing to share their "secrets" and don't mind hauling an old fart around - you guys make me a better skier.  There's always someone interesting to talk to in Goniff's Den and everybody has the attitude of pulling together to make the place work.  I don't think I heard many complaints the whole year because people would rather find solutions than whine.
  • Small town Vermont - I come from a small town in Vermont and this place just feels like home.  My uncle has lived in Springfield (VT) for as long as I can remember...and that's a long time.  We used to ski with him at Okemo (hated it), Round Top (pretty cool place but now a private outing club I think) and Magic back in the mid and late 70s.  Magic was always my favorite of those 3.  Although I like Stowe the best, it's just not practical for me based on where I live now.

Awesome man, thanks!  Love hearing that type of stuff!

Upper Magician is almost always open later in the season.  Even when the sawtooth moon rocks show, there's usually a line far skiers left that holds waaaaaaaay into the spring.  Sure, it looks scary in the summer or early season, but once the moon rocks get covered and packed in, you're good to go and they make fine launch lips fwiw.  The dirt is listed as I think 45 degrees, but the snow when it blows in is more like 50 at the very top.  Man I love that trail!

Yes, there is a decent amount of water that flows under those pines, I just stay out as it is NEVER ok.  Rule of thumb- if it looks good, it isn't.  I call that line Admiral Akbar, as IT'S A TRAP!  hahahahahaha

That clear 180 and the fact that Magic is my preferred type of ski day anyhow equals one happy marketing fella. If ya'll can make sure we get an average or less amount of NCP this winter, that would be great.

Wait a sec...  You work there now???  I guess there's somebody there I don't know after all ;)  pleased to make your e-acquaintance, you gonna be there next weekend?  I'd love to meet ya and buy you a "welcome to Magic" beer!

Also...  BJ is right, there is a new run we're BUSTING ASS to finish that will absolutely change things, raise a few eyebrows and blow up a few skirts to say the least.  I've been staring at this line literally for years planning, dreaming and jonesing- and I'm so psyched it's about to be a reality as I've been hiking it and incessantly cleaning since May...  and we're on schedule to finish it this coming weekend thanks to the big groups that show up to rock out!  The only thing I'm going to throw out as a teaser is that we've done out damndest to bring a smelly, hairy slice of Jay down to Londonderry and feel we've done a hell of a job in doing so.  SUPER steep, very long, natural spacing, options for hucking and cleaner than a brand new whistle in a convent.  Then mix in all the work that's been done to the existing glades and you've got a TON of tree skiing that wasn't there (or was sketchy) last year.  I'll have to see about sourcing an inclineometer so you guys don't think I'm fluffing either, this is a big boy run for sure.

As for Magic claiming skis, I dont really get it.  I ski there all year, and in some seriously sketch conditions and I didn't get a single core shot last year, including the comp, which I ran third from last (when was the last time 130 people skied black magic????).  When the going gets hairy, just stay light on your feet.  If you're just chattering down rocks because you just HAD to send greenline, do your best twinkletoes and think about things that float.  You know- bees, boats, clouds, etc.  Works for me!  ;).  Unweight as you go over them and you'll be fine.  That and a good pair of indie skis seems to last far longer than the mass produced ones fwiw.

I will absolutely post pics after this weekend, bait you all with promises of the gnar gnar, and show you a few of the improvements you will all be enjoying the hell out of this year.  I finally replaced my P&S camera (Big Wednesday ate my last one!) so I will be able to share the teasers with you all much easier and I will try to remember to stop in and stoke the fires more regularly now that we're knockin' on Old Man Winter's door.

*phew!*  that was a lot of typing.  Who's coming this weekend by the way?  Bueller???

"Wicked" is an appropriate name for that new run.  I can't think of a lift-served run with more sustained, tight-treed steepness anywhere else in VT.  Do Work, Brian and I could tell that some serious man-hours have been spent on it.  Many thanks for your hard work.  We cleared out an entrance and the first 100 yards or so of the run.  We also helped clear rocks, trees and other hazards from the LZs of some good-sized hucks.  I can't wait to ski it!

Glad you guys are stoked, that's the whole idea!  I dream about banging through those trees in deep pow probably once or twice a week.  Now I'm excited to post some teaser pics too...  Maybe even a slip up that hints to its location?  Who knows biggrin.gif

DJAK, that's great!  Look forward to putting a face with the handle for sure!

DoWork, Rusty and I will be there Sat and Sun, pm me.

Don't do that!  You'll be giving away free beer  beercheer.gif

I'll definitely be there on Saturday.  When we ventured into the "area", we were shocked at the amount of work done.  We began to wonder what we had left to do.  Big props to you and the others that did all the real work.  I've spied another line that we need to discuss face to face...very little work required and better tree spacing although maybe a little less steep.  It's just a corrolary to what's already in the works.

Reason #8647 Magic will rule this year.  VT Snow Wizards will have a fleet of DPS skis for demo.  DJAK welcome!  I'll be talking to you soon.

Solid logic!  icon14.gif

Also, I like the cut of your jib, sailor!  Never stay satisfied, always look for the next sick line to make happen!  It's amazing what you can accomplish when you toss out the notion it can't be done, that it's unreasonable or too much work.

So happy this happened this year!  Having a full DPS demo center is going to be HUGE!

Also I will be bringing in some Whitedot skis as well to add to the top-of-the-line demo fleet at Magic.  It's about damn time the caliber of skis you can demo there matches the quality of the skiing you'll be doing on them, as those MtDew skis just weren't cutting it!

In other news, this being the final volly weekend and all I think when we get back with pics, stoke and information in hand- it's going to be about time for the OFFICIAL 2011/2012 MAGIC 50TH ANNIVERSARY STOKE THREAD to get the masses pumped up.  I know we've had some great years recently but this season we are looking to top them all, as literally every aspect of the hill has improved since last time the snow flew and that's really saying something.

Can't wait to see everybody up there this weekend!

Looks like the weather is going to be solid for a great day or two of volunteer work.  Can't wait to be back up there in the clean air, with great views, and lots of people with the same sick mind I seem to have.  When I tell my friends and family what I'm doing these weekends, they shake their heads and mutter under their breath...what they don't know...

Come join us so you too can be a part of this amazing movement.  It's far better than Occupying Wall Street!

I'll likely be back up to do some work this weekend.  My inner obsessive compulsive wants to finish up some stuff I was working on two weekends ago before bonking and heading for some beer...

I think this should be our new tagline.

Yet another fantastic reason to come...DPS Demo skis

Good seeing everybody yesterday and great being the second person (other than the lift inspector) up the Red Chair this year!.  I went off on my own clearing that offshoot I mentioned.  I've got it ski-able but it's not to the level of the main tree shot.  I didn't get off the mountain until 4:00 so missed most folks at the end of the day.  I was smoked from clearing all the deadfall and working on the steeps but it's a good hurt.  Licking my wounds today and catching up on some low effort honey-dos at home.

I hiked!!  Wow that's quite a climb.  DoWork deserves a lot of credit for the fine job he and the others have accomplished.  The "woods shot" is steep as a MoFo and I would call it "open" as far as tree spacing, except for the steepness.  Can't wait.

Sorry I didn't see you guys.  I got there late and went down early.

It was great to meet a bunch of you guys. BJ I'm sorry I didn't get to introduce myself to you, I turned around and you were gone, not to be seen again. I took out my clinometer on the second pine section after the cliff band it was at least a 37 degree sustained pitch, very respectable. There was a lot of great work done up there. Nice work everyone!

Didn't get a lot of time to meet everyone this weekend, wish I had.  We were over by the red base painting, cleaning etc.  Dowork gets the prize after a morning of glade work, he was with working on the chair with me until 7 pm.  He was still there when I called him at 12:30 sunday.

Here's what was going on over at the red.

I sometimes go my own way...follow me over that way after the snow flies...and I also know another entry point to what we were working on.  I was shocked that almost nobody was left when I got to the bottom...it was pretty late I guess and the drizzle didn't help keep people lingering on the deck like the 80 degree sun did two weeks ago.

New episode out if you want to put it there and perhaps pepper it with some of that sexy S.O.B. Guy Douchette's fine filming work that would be great!  :)

You guys going to be up this weekend?

Thanks, we will be up the weekend after this comming one.

Made it to Magic for the first time this season and it was smokin!  No crowd, tons of powder and great people.

We had planned to ski Killington and took a right instead!  Good choice.  Red Line (trail) was not open, but everything else was.  Goniff (glade) had tons of snow.  Most of the trails has powder.  Plenty to explore.

I was worried that I would not make it to Magic this season.  It was a blast!
