First time buyer, need opinions please!

Hello all,

I'm going to be a first time buyer of skis and I'm really going to need some advice on what to buy. I'm an east coast skier mostly on groomer Poconos mountains, and a few mountains in New York but also looking to take a trip or two to Vermont this year.

I'm 5'6 153lbs, and I can handle most black diamonds pretty well. I just began doing double blacks last year, could mostly handle them just not with a lot of confidence. I don't do moguls. So far I already know that the length range I'm shooting for is 160-163ish, so I have some room to grow into a better skier. I usually get rentals anywhere from 155-160.

I've been all over skis.com and I can't pick out a pair that I think would be right for me, I don't wanna buy something that will be too much ski or too little. Any suggestions?

These are a few of the skis I was debating for myself.

Nordica Jet Fuel Skis

Opinions? Suggestions? All advice is welcome.

Thank you.

Boots. If you haven't already, get your boots set up. You ski in the Poc's, where do you reside and I can give you some direction to a bootfitter and/or for deals on some of the skis you mentioned above.

If only it was that simple. There is so much more to getting the right boot. I would suggest going to NEstors in Allentown for your boots. If you want to head down to Philly area, see Steve A. at Wicks on Exton. But make no mistake, the ski is the sexy and fun thing to talk about, focus on the boot first, but in the meantime check out the Nordica Hot Rod deals here: http://www.epicski.com/forum/list/7/-50

I'm a Volkl ski guy, based on personal exp.  Consider the AC30.  Read reviews, do your research - I think you'll find all the feedback will be positive.  163 cm. is a good length - they will be really quick at that length.  I also agree with the feedback on boots - the best ski will make no difference if your boots are killing your feet.  Talk to your ski shop about boots - the trend for recreational skiers is to go with softer flex - I went from a stiff boot (last 30 years) to a soft flexing boot and I won't go back.

Ok so I went to my local D&Q got sized for boots and picked out a extremely comfortable and nice fitting pair.

Nordica Hot Rod 85s 2009. Opinons?

Also the sales asscoiate pointed me to two different pair of skis.

Atomic Smokes Ti $599.95
Or
K2 Apache Raiders $549.95

Which ski would you guys suggest? Both are in my $$$ range.

HR 85 is a fine boot if it fits your foot. D&Q are pretty good guys so, I am guessing they did their job. The Smoke and the Raider, both are nice intermediate skis, the Smoke wants to be driven, the Raider wants to be ridden if that makes sense. There are leftover deals out there that surpass these two of you want to keep your options open but either of these are not bad choices for the Poc's I would choose the Atomic over the Raider between these two.

Thanks Phil!

I've decided to go with the Hot Rods, and the K2 Raiders. Hopefully they're not too much different than the Smokes. Saturday can't come soon enough now! Too bad I'll have to wait a few months for season to actually be here.
