Hope to see you at ESA.  Maybe we could have a Big Sky group reunion with TC and Squatty.

Hope I can make it - be fun to ski together again.

Ask her whether it is better to have red or green chili in Chile.

I know this says the event is open to beginners, but can anybody elaborate more? As a beginner (easy/easy-mid blues), will I still be able to get a lot out of an event like this? It all sounds like so much fun!

Matt, perhaps I should let one of the coaches or former beginner students elaborate, but I'll take a stab at it.

We usually have one small group that is comprised of beginners.  During the clinic its not unheard of for a few of the beginners to be moved into an intermediate group.

Hope this helps

Matt, we always have a less-experienced group--those who ski infrequently or who have only skied a short time--going out at ESAs. Last year I coached this group. We had a blast and did a lot of skiing. Those who tired during the day were welcome to go in early, but the group kept skiing until 4 p.m. I got letters mid-season from a couple of the students who were inspired to write after going skiing again and enjoying their new capabilities (nothing is more gratifying to a teacher than letters telling us that what the student learned stuck with them), so they got something out of it!

Hi Matt!  Nolo is right.

However, you have to realize that you are NOT a beginner if you're on easy blues.  And we usually have a few skiers like you.

If someone has never been on skis...ever before...well we've not done that yet, but if there were a few such skiers...we could do easily enough.  Mostly people have a little bit of experience--like you--when they arrive.

PM holasnow on this board. He is my brother-in-law and went to the Stowe event last year. He was about your level at that time, I should think. My impresson when they visited us last January was that he was had some fun on a deep powder day and able to ski all over the mountain on natural snow conditions with much more confidence, which was a good improvement.  So yea he seemed to get somethig out of it.

Matt - my daughter was one of Nolo's "beginner" students last year (didn't know who Nolo was until just now, wonder what her hubby's forum name is - he skied with us a lot and was great).  My daughter had a great time and learned a lot.  And Epic is a lot more than on snow instruction/coaching.  Its also the evening events and a great group of people to do whatever with, but Weem's dog is a bit shy.  Bottomline - you should not be concerned about your ability level.  It won't stay where it is long if you attend.

Hubby is Ridge Hippie, Steve. Please say hey to Tristen from me!

Wow--- thanks for the tremendous feedback everybody. It sounds fantastic and I appreciate the words from those who have done this in the past. We're in NYC so Stowe might work out really well. Time to start counting my our work vacation days...

On top of this, it's more than just a trip. As you may have noticed, Epic's one of the few civil community's on the web (baring an occasional helmet or traverse thread ;) ), and you meet a lot of cool people to ride with at these events. I've done the two Big Sky events and Stowe last year, and the coaching is top notch and the people are great. I'm not one of the super active folk on this forum, but I've still skied with two or three dozen of the guys and gals on this forum, and there's not one that I didn't have fun with. As you get involved in the community, the coaching and experience can go way beyond a week's worth of instruction.

I had the pleasure of skiing with Aleph Mom and she's incredible!  How's she doing?

My mother wears ski boots :)

She's doing well... living the dream down in South Carolina. I'm about to start pushing her to get a Tahoe trip planned this year. Her brother (my uncle) has a place on Donner Lake, so maybe we'll go visit Phil and bring him some Tastykakes.

I'll tell her you said, "Hi."

I am working in Truckee and do go over to the lake from time to time. You WILL have to make it out here. Tastykakes, Amaroso Rolls, Rye and some good pastrami is what I am missing most.

He's not shy if you go near my truck when he's in it!    He's coaching one of the intermediate groups this season.IMG00088-20100604-0915.jpg

Just use Trekchick's glove as a tug-of-war/chew toy and he'll love ya.

Good dog to protect your truck - maybe he was just concentrating on the discussion in prep for his role as a coach.

Let's just use Trekchick as a tug-of-war/chew toy!

And yeah, SteveE...Merlin is very studious!

Are we off topic yet?

Exactly!  Where do I sign up for the pudding wrestling?

I'm in for Stowe. I heard a certain Pug might be there to watch me ski my first turns of the season AND get it captured on tape for the enjoyment of all. Unfortunatly, Aspen isnt going to be in the cards this year -- save us a spot for 2012 please!!

YAY another pudding wrestling candidate!!!

I think I'm in this year, too.

Just gotta get my ducks lined up!

It's always a great way to start the season.  This year, no knee problems for me!

Twin tip....  I thought you were a free-heeler?

Trying to be.  That's my goal.  But I'm not there yet!  It's going to take awhile until I can keep up with anyone on my tele skis!  So, right now, if I want to ski with people, I need to use my regular alpine gear.  So, my choice is to either do ESA Stowe as I've done the past 2 years, or, go up there, get a boot fitting in Stowe for my Scarpas  (I need it) and take some tele lessons at Stowe while others do the Epic clinics, then join the festivities at night.
