Staying in North Lake Tahoe?

Thread Starter

What are good locations and lodging recommendations in North Lake Tahoe? We seem to prefer relatively casual and low key locations but places with at least some variety. During a ski week we'd probably eat in once or twice, have heavy appetizers during apres ski and then go home and crash 3-4 times, and go out for a nice dinner 1-2 times. As a point of reference we stayed in Frisco, CO last year and really liked it. We also spent a week in Vail and thought the village really lacked charm. Just haven't been able to get a good feel for what it would be like to stay on in North Lake Tahoe area.

If you are skiing Squaw/A-Meadows and NorthStar....Truckee has a rustic Frisco feel.

I think you would also like Tahoe City.  The River Grill and Bridgetender are good for apre ski and Wolfdale's is a fine dining spot.

Great Breakfast - Squeeze Inn - Northside of Main St. in Truckee

Good Breakfast Ski Area - Sugar Bowl - Judah Lodge - get there about 8 and have breakfast while waiting for lifts to open at 9, and you will be able to park right in front of lodge.

Most unique and good dinner place.   Soule Domain, behind the Biltomore Hotel Casino on stateline, no shore.  Refurbished Poney Express relay station, make reservations, excellent food, not overly expensive.

Cheap food, Tahoe Biltmore's specials.

Just a few suggestions.  If you do a search on Northshore you will get a lot of good info.

Good call Pete.    Also check the local free papers (Tahoe bonanza/Sierra Sun), there are usually offers for here such as  two for one entrees or free corkage etc mid week

Assuming you don't want to go ski-in/out, Tahoe City and Truckee are both good choices for a week.  I'd go Tahoe City if you're planning to hit Alpine and Squaw, Truckee if you want to add Northstar.

In Tahoe City, there are a bunch of good options.  One that's often overlooked is Granlibakken, which has good rates, a kick-ass breakfast buffet, and deals with and shuttles to most of the mountains.  (In fact, you can take a shuttle right to the back side of Alpine and get it to yourself for an hour on weekends.)

Pete, thanks a million for the Soule Domain tip. Wife & I enjoyed a wonderful meal there on recent stay.
