Strength to weight issue in the backcountry?

So I struggle with this.  I have found that when my weight is lower, my body is more efficient; I am able to skin quicker and further and with greater ease.  However, at a lower weight, my strength goes down, which hinders the descents.  So does one compromise one's ability to go up with ease, or does one stay a little thicker for more strength with the downs?  Or is it just to find the perfect balance.

I'm lazy so I let my body find it's own ideal weight, which it does according to my needs, as determined by my recent activity.  The body adapts slowly; changes in activity level can be challenging (unless the change is from a type of exercise to a less active activity).

 

Once upon a time in the dim and distant past, I did a little bit of weight lifting and gained some muscle mass.  I got a lot stronger, and could do more work, lift more weight, etc..  It was not easier however; it was harder.  If you have more weight you are doing more work climbing.  It will seem like more work.

 

My advice go for the strength and work harder while climbing.  Being strong is good for you confidence, which is usually good for your skiing.

"Having more strength and power will help you in any physical endeavor.  Yes, any one.  There is not a sport you can play where you could have too much strength".

Crossfit has totally changed me. It makes you STRONG!

Honestly, if you're talking real bc excursions here, light is right.  If you are using your own power to go uphill, and generally active, your leg strength will be decent if not great anyway, and for performance not being redlined from the up is a lot more important than what you squat.

 

You also can squat/deadlift/do plyos etc. and add to strength without adding much if any bodyweight, assuming staying light is your goal. 

 

For good bc performance, the physique hierarchy basically is:  skinny, skinny w a bit of a beer gut, active couch potato (wide guys who get out a lot but don't spare the pizza or the safety, as the case may be), ripped fairly muscular guys, bigger ripped and well-padded, and then successful tax accountants.
