One of the worlds toughest races is open to amateur long distance riders: http://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/Race-Across-America/281761605092

I'm watching the progress of team JDRF: http://www.teamjdrf.org/

This group is mostly over fifty and over 200 lbs. The fastest tandem team members will cycle across America in six days!

That is so far beyond crazy.

Imagine 500 miles a day on a tandem for six consecutive days. That's 25 mph average for 20 hours a day!

Every time I think I am beginning to get into decent condition, I read or see something like this and say WTF! I am so lame...

yeah my friend just finished his first 1/2 iron man. Yeah, Goal......  He ran the 15k section in the 7's and says there's so many guys were just criusing past him..  He finished in 5:26, the winner was 4:20 something.

You ought to try living in Boulder County.  The folk here are nuts.  It's like Chamonix but with a focus on fitness instead of (just) extreme.

Anyone else following RAAM?  I'm spending a fair bit of time checking out the various blogs and leader board.

Terrible accident yesterday.  Diego Ballesteros Cucurull has hit by a distracted driver who drifted well onto the shoulder.  He was in critical condition, but has been upgraded to serious.  What a terrible way to end a race.

There's an article here:  http://www.kansas.com/2010/06/16/136...ritically.html

BTW, the article is incorrect -- Diego was on the right shoulder, not the left.
