Powder Skiing May 23, 2010 - Gloat Warning!

I skied Edelweiss Bowl on Teton Pass this morning.  No photos 'cuase I had no compatriots.

It was cold, windy, sunny, and about 6" of completely beautiful, white, midwinter-quality powder snow had blanketed the bowl.  This was on top of a smooth, firm base. The skiing was sublime, ESPECIALLY when you consider the calendar.  I had a good five-hundred-yard-wide untracked section to choose a line from.

Sorry, but I couldn't resist gloating.

We now return you to our normal summer discussions regarding ski length and width.

Bob, you have to face facts. You would've enjoyed it far more if you'd been on the right skis!

Yeah.  I need to work on that.  Just think how much bigger my grin could have been if I'd had the right skis.

Not even remotely silent, but there's no need.  It's no secret around JH that the skiing is good up in the mountains right now.

The parking area at the top of Teton Pass was absolutely jammed when I got back to my car on Sunday.  We're expecting to see the first couple of tram cars completely full of skiers and boarders this coming Saturday morning when the JH tram opens for the "summer".

So, give it up Bob, what ski did you choose for this incredible adventure? Any second guessing that you could have had a better time on a different ski?  I'm sure there are many who can't wait to proclaim it was the wrong one!

I'm eating my heart out. You inspire us all!

Heh.

Old, beat-up Rossi Bandit XX (from, like, 1998) with Fritschi Freerides. 184cm. I think they might be 74mm underfoot.

Those were my fattest skis when I first bought them and I thought using them was cheating.

My, how times have changed.

As to a better time on a different ski - hmmm.  I honestly don't know.  I had a great time on the ones I was using.

Bob,

I was thinking you gloat on goat(s). Bandits, isn't that bringing a knife to a gunfight. Hey, just having some fun.

When the JH tram does open for the summer, are there restrictions on where you can or can't ski?

Sounds like this could be fiction with no photo documentation available

Seriously, though, it sounds like a lot of fun and if any of our PNW wet weather from the last week is heading your way there will be plenty more new snow for you to enjoy.

Hey.  I'm skiing on Banditos... I don't need no steeeeenkeen goats!!!!

As for the tram, the "rule" is that if you ride the tram up, you aren't supposed to ski/board inside the ski area boundaries.  That's no big deal because there are thousands of acres just outside the boundaries that will have stellar skiing.  They always announce that if people abuse the privilege by skiing inbounds, they'll just cut off the ability to bring skis up the tram in the summer.

There are always poachers, of course, who are too lazy/stupid/arrogant/whatever and insist on skiing inside the area, but it hasn't been enough of a problem yet for the ski corp to get too pissed off.  Here's hoping it stays that way.

I'll have photos of this weekend's skiing.  Seriously, there is still a LOT of snow up highl.  We've had almost no runoff yet this spring.

Bob, this is all good but what do you want to do when you grow up?   Damn good to be you...... Memorial day turns, how sweet is that?
