The Dog Days of Winter, errr Spring Skiing - Blackcomb May 11, 12, 13

No photos of epic pow days, or burly 30 year olds hucking cliffs here....I really enjoy this time of year at Whistler / Blackcomb,

the hill is empty, the Village is empty and after skiing you can ride a bike, go for a (chilly) swim or play a round of golf...

There's snow up there somewhere....

Regrettably Showcase T-bar is closed as well as Spanky's Ladder...the patrol was keeping the Proletariat out of the High Alpine. As there has been little snow in the past four days, and off-piste had gone through numerous freeze-thaw cycles, Groomers were the order of the day....very few people were on the hill and the grooming was good....

As I mentioned, the place was empty!

I much prefer skiing Whistler (seen across the valley) over Blackcomb, and historically Whistler has stayed open until the first or second week of June. This year the Bean Counters closed Whistler in April and Blackcomb will be closing May 24th, which seems far too early with this much snow! Having said that, the majority of people you see on the hill are pass holders, Interwest has to been hemorrhaging money this late in the season (well, Interwest has been hemorrhaging money for years, however W/B has always turned a good profit...). Temps in the Village were 65 to 70F, and around 40F in the afternoon on the hill, sunglasses and sweater weather!

Cheers

Makes me want to plan a trip to Whistler Blackcomb.

Darn Flav - I almost pinged you and for some silly reason assumed you would not overlap with our trip. Clearly a bad assumption! Bummer.

We had some good runs down Ridge Runner & offered you a little thumbs up for showing us that one a few years ago. Managed a little tour, courtesy of a super-experienced  friend. Much more of a PITA when Showcase is not happening...

I think that Intrawest's problems were magnified by the Olympics and Paralympics, which affected resort operations for over a month during peak season.

I wonder if this will affect summer camp operations up at Horstman Glacier....

Sorry I missed you! Yes R&R was the goods for "mindless cruising"! Feel free to ping me anytime...

Regrettably my ski year is done, I hope yours is not...

Phil you're welcome any time....thought of you recently as I actually broke down and bought two new pair of sticks (at the local ski shop no less), first new sticks since 1998!

You can't throw that out there without saying what you bought....
