2010 Watea 84 length

Hi All.  I'm new to the forum and was looking for some advice.

I'm looking into buying a set of Watea 84s.  I demoed the 176 and absolutely loved them, but didn't get to check out the 184 before the weather crapped out.  I'm 25, 6'2, a little north of 200 lbs, and on a good day I'm probably about an 8 skier.  I've been skiing a pair of 177 Volkls for the past 7 or 8 years and really need to upgrade.

I'm worried about the extra length of the 184 because I've been spending more and more time in the bumps the last couple years and I don't want to lose too much maneuverability.  At the same time, I'm worried about going with the 176 now and wishing I had gotten something a little longer on days with a few inches of powder.

One idea I had was going with the 184 and throwing a railflex binding system on it and riding it the front setting.  Please let me know if that makes any sense at all or if I'm ruining the ski by putting a system binding on it.  Any help you guys could give me would really be appreciated.

Thanks for all your help.

Welcome to Epic, Carl4 - I'd definitely say the 184, given your stats and level. The 84 is a nice ski, really versatile if you're looking for something that can carve but still be happy in soft snow and bumps. But it runs a little softer compared to a comparable Volkl, so you'd want to go up a length. Also agree with your hunch about the railflex. Fine binding, and while the position changes won't have as much effect as they would on a fat ski, you'll notice the difference. Bonus is that you can slide the binding off for transport.

Thanks for the quick response beyond.  I think I'll give it a little more thought, but I'm pretty positive I'll be going with the 184.

Do you happen to know anything about the 2011 Watea?  Are there any substantial changes from the 2010 version?

My understanding is that '11 Wateas at 78, 84, 94 and 101 are the same as '10s except for graphics; there is a new Watea 98 with early rise tip.  Have you looked for your 84s at O2, as they have had sweet pricing on these?  I echo size recommendation (184) above for your specs.  Good luck.

Yeah I saw that.  That's exactly what inspired me to post. I really wanted to make sure that 184 wasn't too much ski for me before I pulled the trigger on that deal.

I've got a pair of 2011 Watea 84s on hold in the 184 length.. I'm 6'0 and weigh 185lb.

Do you think that length is right, or would I be better with the 176cm?

If you're a bad skier, go for the shorter ones. smile.gif
