I spent last year in Whistler working as a lifty. Id never skied before nor visited a resort, after the winter I was skiing black runs with ease, doing tree runs, jumps, and a few Double black diamond's, when they were in use! My room mate who was a Level 2 instructor couldnt believe how much I progressed and said I had a natural ability and a no fear mind set, and I seemed to watch, learn and pick things up quickly. Anyway.....
Im going to be working a winter season in NZ hopefully(Australia if I cant get in NZ), not sure where yet, im waiting on feedback from my applications as a lift operator. I really want to become a ski instructor even if it's just teaching the little kids(worked on the beginner chairs so learnt a few things the instructors taught) now when I google information I always seem to come across 6-12 week courses that are well outside of my budget. Im just wondering if there are any 5 day courses, where i just pay to learn and take the exam.(they did this in Whistler) or are there any other ways I can get my foot in the door. Learn and work at the same time teaching kids and at the end of the season obtain the relevant qualifications? Do any resorts do this?
What about Hiring clinics, im very determined and passionate to become an instructor, so im not going to pay just to turn up. What are the odd's of actually being picked for a job. If anyone has done something similar or if there are instructors who actually do the hiring and have any advice, information etc then I would be very grateful.
Hopefully I can obtain at least a Level 1 NZSIA, and start my path to teaching around the world.
Thanks for reading the long post, I welcome any useful information.
