Endless Page-load failures

O/S: Win2k, SR4 and WinXP, SR2
Firefox 3.5.5 on both

Quite a few "forum pages" (like:  http://www.epicski.com/forum/list/9) fail to load at all and many threads only load partially, then freeze.

In many cases, the browser starts the load process and stops loading anything more when it reaches an attempt to "transfer data from yui.yahooapis.com"...

In other cases, the browser fails when it indicates it's trying to "Read static.ak.connect.facebook.com"

I have my Firewalls set to block any activity from most Demographics collection sites, but this usually doesn't block page loads - just the demographics traffic and some advertisements.

The Coaching forum now fails to load on either machine.  Clearing caches and system reboots have no effect.

These failures have been occurring for a while now, though I'm not sure how long because when it happens I simply stop looking at EpicSki and move on to other interests.  I'm about ready to just move on to other interests permanently.

Don't let me stop you from moving on. However, try turning off your browser add-ons and then load a page. Perhaps there is a java error in the scripts and IE,ect. goes into a endless loop. Run a spyware program see if there's anything. Then there's always safe mode boot up to check issues. good luck.

I just get pages that don't load, no error message, just a blank page.  Multiple refreshes and eventually the page loads.  My access is from the "new posts" interface and I command-click on posts to get them to load in new tabs, then after clicking on all posts i'm interested in I go through all the tabs.

However this problem happens even if I just click on a post.

After many attempts to re-load this thread in Firefox (and consistent failures) I finally managed to load it with IE after several attempts.  Firefox on either machine simply can't load a number of EpicSki pages now.

Already tried disabling everthing in the way of Add-Ons, caches, other running applications, as many 'services' as I could find (anything remotely related) and reboots.  Even shut down my firewall to see if that was blocking something - nope.   Randomly, forum pages and threads just don't load leaving a blank page with no errors reported anywhere.

Sometimes (rarely) the "many refreshes" method will work if done over a long period of time.  The only clues I can find are the stoppages when loading something from yui.yahooapis.com or static.ak.connect.facebook.com.

If something from background communications to Facebook is the issue, it will never work properly for me as I don't do Facebook.  If background links or communications with Yahoo are to blame, same there.

It's damned irritating to see EpicSki's performance as a website continually degrade.

I can understand your frustrations ma. I went to Firefox because of the same issues. Everything works fine now.

To repair Winsock if you have Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) installed, type netsh winsock reset at the command prompt, and then press ENTER.

You can also reregister your DNS: Start -> Run -> cmd -> ipconfig /registerdns

Run -> cmd -> ipconfig /flushdns

After making changes, be sure to QUIT your browser and relaunch it to
test the effectiveness of the change.

Hi Michael,

Thanks for the problem report.  I have passed the information along to our team, and they are investigating and trying to get the problem resolved as quickly as possible.  In the mean time, I do have one quick question: you indicate that you don't use Facebook Connect to access EpicSki.  Have you ever used it or experimented with it in the past?  If you use Facebook, you should be able to go in to your Facebook application settings and verify that EpicSki is not linked to your Facebook account.  This shouldn't be causing problems even if it is linked, but verifying that the accounts are not linked will help us ensure that we are investigating the right problem.

Thanks for your help and your patience!

Hi WKH, I can say that I have never linked Facebook to epicski, and although I'm having only a subset of the problems that michaela is having, I'm having white blank pages loading when I click on a post, the address bar and title bar show the old page, not the URL and title of the post I clicked on.

Having changed nothing <yet> ... this thread and several other problem threads successfully loaded on the first try (XP Machine) today.

On the Win2k machine though, it still freezes when trying to load the forum list
( www.epicski.com/forum/ ).  For some freezes it states: "Read static.ak.connect.facebook.com" in the lower left status bar region of Firefox.  Other freezes state: "Transferring data from yui.yahooapis.com..." in the same location.

I have not now, nor have I ever had a Facebook account of any kind.  I have never even visited the Facebook site.  I also find no Cookies related to Facebook that may have been placed there by third parties.

Will try Slider's suggestions shortly, but have no issues of any kind with other sites, VPNs nor any other application on either machine.  I use Norton Internet Security on both machines, but have tried loading EpicSki pages with it disabled on both machines (and the Service killed off) with no change in EpicSki behavior.

From a frozen EpicSki page (any) in Firefox I can immediately go to any other website with no issues.

I also just tried IE 6.0 against EpicSki's Forum page in the Win2k machine.  It froze up with a blank page on the first try.  After a second, then third try it finally loaded the Forum list after first freezing with no activity for about 20-25 seconds.  After that, it reloads rather quickly.   Trying Firefox on that machine right after IE had worked showed no improvement.  No amount of waiting brings up the Forum List in Firefox with or without the Firewall engaged.

I have intermittent issues loading pages as well. I sometimes don't get the interactive text box and formatting tools for the reply window.  It just says "reply" with no icons below it for the tools and no box to type text in to. It happens more often when quoting or editing than it does with clean replies.  But, reloading, backing out of the thread, or clearing the cache usually resolves the problem.  Kinda of frustrating sometimes, but not a show-stopper.

Happens using Firefox 3 with Vista, XP and Win 7

Same thing, plus I get horizontal bars across the reply window. I think I reported that one before....

Thanks for the additional details.  We're investigating now and will let you know if we find the issue or need additional details.  We'll be releasing an upgrade of the platform before too long, so that may resolve the issue as well.

Thanks!
