Mini Trip Report... Alta 3/24/10

I went over to Alta expecting a full 20"- seven from yesterday and 13" from last night... not so, apparently yesterday was the storm day. But... Alta being Alta, Ballroom and Shoulder was closed  (along with almost everything else) during the storm yesterday and opened first thing. Then an untracked Backside and finally, Devil's Castle. It was nice and cold, the snow was a bit denser that February blower and we didn't see the full 20"- more like a foot, although, as always there were spots, chutes and gullys where you'd hit two ft or so, especially on Backside and the Castle. Pretty freakin' sweet, all in all. And one of the most glorious bluebird days that ever was...oh, and the place mysteriously uncrowded.

Thanks for posting! This looks awesome. I've always wanted to ski Alta and just haven't made the trek. Looks like it is well worth it!

I was there from 3/24 through 3/29.  We had everything from refrozen corn to stormriding with re-fills.  3/26 (storm day) and 3/27 (see above!) were the high points, but they opened Baldy on 3/28, and the main chute was soft and creamy... worth every bit of the hike up.

3/24 offered a combination of leftovers from 6" the previous day and firm tracked snow.  3/25 was windy and cloudy, with the best conditions to be had on sheltered north-facing areas.  Elsewhere, it was a bit rough until about an inch of fresh came in mid-afternoon.  Unfortunately, my wife hurt her knee that afternoon, so we got to spend that afternoon at the clinic.  Fortunately, we had brough our XC skis, and she was able to shuffle around between the base areas on them.

My daughter was working Supreme on 3/26, so I spent most of the storm over there, on Catherines, the lower 40 and Supreme bowl.  It really was hero snow by the end of the day... On saturday, the morning line at Collins pushed me to wildcat trees, which were wonderful, but I didn't get to Castle until it had been thoroughly digested.  Even so, there was fun snow to be had at the Wall.  On my last run I cut over to Eddies from 3rd entry and the bottom half was an interesting combination of soft untracked and refrozen tracks...a bit tricky but still enjoyable.

I had low expectations for 3/29, since it had warmed up on Sunday and refrozen overnight, but it was a warm day, with everything softening up nicely (except the high T, which was 'firm", to say the least).

Unfortunately, I lost my camera on 3/29 and it is probably well buried by now, so no pictures.

Please stop the "tease " pics !!  Being in Boise is just close enough to make a trip possible but not viable at the drop of a hat.
I check Alta's site so often that I am catching grief from my workmates ...lol             19" today !!! urgh. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!..................
