I looked at the same issue you did only about 16 yrs ago. I went to Jackson looked at the life there and all over the west. I choose Tahoe for several reasons. First of all Squaw and Alpine Meadows. Two great ski areas about 15 mins from my door step. The lake, you never get sick of looking at the lake. Women, there seems to be more women around then say in Jackson Hole. A lot of women from the city (S.F.) come up all the time and are a ready supply of action if you are younger. The local gals are good also, if you have a good job and aren't a dirt bag you should do well.
Also having San Francisco a three hour drive is great benefit, when you get sick of the mountains go to the city and have some great food, watch the Giants lose, good times.
You don't get sick of skiing, but you do become very selective as to when you go. I don't have to ski if it isn't good. No reason to, I live here. You may think you are a good skier now, but wait until you get 5 or so years of 70+ days a year, then see what you think. Also a lot of us have sleds (snowmobiles) so when the skiing isn't prefect we get out and do that.
Summers in Tahoe are awesome, the tourists get to be a little much sometimes, but the mountain biking, water skiing and general hanging out is amazing.
As for which towns around Tahoe, I'm a north shore guy, always have been. The best thing would be come out and drive around and check it out. Truckee is nice, but no big lake, I love the west shore, but traffic in the summer can be brutal. Best thing to do is just drive around and see what you like and go from there. Let me know if you need any more info.
If I was you I would get on a plane tomorrow, we about to get nailed with snow.

I'm sick of the city and am at a ski mountain every weekend as it is.
Wondering if anyone has felt this way, moved out west only to find it wasn't what they wanted. If so where di you move to and what didn't you like? Summers too slow? Did skiing become less fun if you can do it every day?
